I removed my sliders to refinish them. They are two years old and a lot of the finish was gone on the under side. The rest looked pretty good. I've been rattle can painting the scrapes and scratches to try and keep the rust down, but a thin coat of rattle can paint won't stop rust for long.

When I stripped the powder coat, I was really surprised to see rust on top and side surfaces that still had decent powder coating. It appears that moisture was getting under the powder coat and rusting. I'm not real familiar with powder coating, but I'm pretty sure that if this is typical performance, I'm not sure its the right coating for skid plates and sliders. Doesn't appear to be bonding to the metal.

Was this just a bad powder coating job or is this what should be expected once you damage the envelope?

I have observed the same thing with my roof rack. There are areas of the rack where I can peel off chunks of the powerdercoat. It's exposed to the elements and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the best job to begin with.

Just have to grind it all down and re-do with rattle cans later, I guess. That's if I can't find a sandblasting shop to take it off for me.

I found it at Advanced auto parts. The powder coating becomes soft and is easily scraped, sometimes wiped off.

Mine were pretty rust after 42K miles and two Michigan winters. Earlier this week, I took mine off, sanded them down and used a can of black matte rustoleum. I think they came out nice... although after a couple days i noticed that there are some chips in the paint and the silver is showing through slightly... Overall I think it looks good and woudl recommend it.

I'm using POR 15 products, Metal Ready, POR 15 and Chassis Black top coat.

Inspected the pinch weld area, and the drivers side was clean, no rust, passenger side has some significant surface rust. I think I haven't been getting the mud and muck from the top side of the bar. I'm going to treat both sides before I re-install the bars.

bottom = 2 coats of POR15, no topcoat yet
Top = Metal Ready dried, you can kind of see the yellow from the zinc oxide coating.

Actually that was Rock Lizard's argument against powder coat and why he uses Rustoleum - easy to apply - easy to touch-up

I brushed it on, they don't sell it in rattle can, but I believe you can spray with a gun. por15 is not UV resistant so you have to topcoat it. They sell a number of colors of top coats, even some that look like bare metal, but once you have a base coat of por15, you can rattle can any color top coat you want.
