Easier said than done. It would be very difficult to do, plus I don't think it would be street legal.

Why not?

It would be easy to install a fuel cell,a little pain with the pump install but otherwise it wouldn't be that hard.Granted you'd need one that is would fit inside the gas tank skid to still use the skid.

Have you checked out the prices on the OEM gas tanks? They want a pretty penny,like over $600 at those discount OEM part suppliers,that's just the tank,no pump or anything.

The main benefit I could see with an aftermarket fuel cell would be if you could get one that was more of a wedge shape in the factory location. You could gain quite a bit of clearance in the back that way. Too much work for me though.

Never said it would not be easy to install, thats a few minutes of work, and agree the stock ones are expensive, but you still would not be gaining that much from what I can see, now if it is a full on trail rig thats different, but come on....

I would love a larger tank. Would be nice to do long hauls with home made B100. If you could figure out max dimensions someone like http://www.aerotanks.com could probably fab one up. I imagine the cost would be high, but you might be able to gain volume and clearance. I haven't paid much attention to the existing space, but now I might. Seems like gas tanks can always be improved.

Aren't there some safety issues that you and your DOT people would have to take into consideration if you permanently mounted a fuel tank / cell inside the interior compartment where burning fuel could effect occupant safety?

I would love to have a 24 gallon tank under the KJ though. Stopping every 250 miles is really a pain.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical conversion device. It produces electricity from fuel (on the anode side) and an oxidant (on the cathode side), which react in the presence of an electrolyte. The reactants flow into the cell, and the reaction products flow out of it, while the electrolyte remains within it. Fuel cells can operate virtually continuously as long as the necessary flows are maintained.

Fuel cells are different from electrochemical cell batteries in that they consume reactant, which must be replenished, whereas batteries store electrical energy chemically in a closed system. Additionally, while the electrodes within a battery react and change as a battery is charged or discharged, a fuel cell's electrodes are catalytic and relatively stable.

Many combinations of fuel and oxidant are possible. A hydrogen cell uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen as oxidant. Other fuels include hydrocarbons and alcohols. Other oxidants include air, chlorine and chlorine dioxide.
