Hello, I'd like to install some rocker protection on my 02 KJ and I've been considering the RRO Rockrails or Rocksteps. http://www.rocky-road.com/kjrockrail.html I like the idea of having a step but was wondering if I'd be giving up any protection due to the rails sticking out a couple more inches from the body than regular Rockrails. I can imagine there would be more leverage exerted on the pinch weld with the steps but that's it. Has anyone used either or seen them in action? Thanks, J

The step is useless. I had some and never used the step. If you want strength go with Boulderbars they attach to the frame at three points instead of two.

Definately check out the BoulderBars before you decide. I love mine.

I've had both, StepRails and BoulderBars. The step rails were good. I liked the added protection provided by the 2" extra that they protrude for saving the lower door panels. And the step feature was only useful for my 5 year old getting in/out and for my washing the roof.

However, even RRO said (while they were replacing mine under warranty because I broke my step rails) that the added leverage provided by the wider bars makes them more suseptable to bending.

Check out my web page; I broke mine - badly! Now I was VERY hard on them for 2 years before they let go, but they did let go.

I replaced them with BoulderBars because I didn't want to reuse the old holes in my frame. So having installed both, I can tell you that the BoulderBars mount at the frame closer to the tires, where the frame is thicker. And of course, they have 3 mounting points v. 2. Plus, the mounting arms are thicker.

So it comes down to how you'll be using them. For the ultimate is strenght, go BoulderBars. If you want good protection with the added feature of the step, get the RRO's. Plus, they do warranty them for life to the original owners, so if you do break them, they'll stand behind their product. They did for me.

Does anyone make a double nerf bar, like you can find for XJs and CJ/YJ/TJ, for the Liberty? I'd like to replace my OEM rock rails with something like this:
http://www.4wd.com/newsite/shop/productdetail.asp?pid=371154&model=cherokee&cat=19&kid=473&catid=473&mid=n

Would XJ aftermarket items such as these work on the KJ? You have to drill into the frame anyways, right?

I bought Adam's regular RO rails and installed them with real bolts instead of the self tappers and they have supported vehicle many times. I guess if there is an issue he can get the warranty for me since he was the original owner. I don't forsee a problem.

I have them for side impact protection first, rock rails second.

Something like this would be great but I haven't found them for the KJ. I even considered buying rockrails or boulder bars and having a nerf welded up to come up with the same concept. Not sure if I could get that done for a reasonable price though. I'd like a step for the purpose of saving my leather seats from getting trashed from sliding in and out over the sides all the time. Thanks for all the input guys, I'm still up in the air though LOL. My Jeep is stock and used more for goofing around in the woods and getting to fishing spots than hardcore rock crawling but who knows I might end up in Moab with it some day!

Those are EXACTLY what I was looking for! Who makes those rails and whose KJ is that?

This guy who posted here quite a while back said he would make some like that, and he still has them on his website. It' AJ's Offroad Armor, the link to his rails can be found here: http://www.ajsoffroadarmor.com/RockRails/index.htm

Hopefully he still makes them, because one day I plan on picking a set up..

AJs doesn't list the Super Rail as being available for the Liberty. He only lists the Liberty Rockrails, which look like the Rocky Road Step Rails (two mount points, slight protrusion from edge for "step"). These are listed as available for the Liiberty, but the price is listed as "N/A," which doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. I've sent an email to AJ to see if he still make the Super Rails for the Liberty. I'll post whatever/whenever I hear back from them.

I believe the RR model that protudes is called the Step Rail (and it doesn't fit the 05+ models and they don't plan to alter it to fit). The one that doesn't protrude is called the Rock Rail.

That is "FreeJeep" 's rig. You'll find him on the midwest board.

I sent an email to AJ. I think those Super Rails might just be the ticket for me. I like the Super Nerfs as well but there is no step area really and at the moment I think a step would be nice. Thanks for the ideas, I'll post after I hear back from AJ.

I have some custom made double tube rails on my KJ.

Image

Pictures and hand scribbled plans can be found on my web site if you want to make some or have someone make them for you. (I just ask that no one go into commercial production using this plans.)

http://www.ltlowe.ca/liberty/nerfs/
http://www.ltlowe.ca/liberty/rail_plans.jpg

My only regret is that we welded them to the inner frame rather than bolting them and now I want to get them poweder coated, but oops, they don't come off.

Sorry for the scribbling, I meant to do plans in a cad package but just never got around to it.

Todd

All you need to do is Rhino-line the whole Jeep from the door moldings down! :D

I sent them an email to see whats available. I really like those Super Rails and may swing for those over the boulderbars just to get the step. I dont really like RR's steprail version.

Todd, that bumper painted body color is sweet. I'm mine is in transit and I'm having it painted Khaki to match my KJ as well. What's that plastic part covering the winch hole? Does it come with the ARB?

And...

of course I'd help you if you need it. RRO says you won't need it since it's the Rock Rail and not the Step Rail. But if you do, I'm there.

The peice covering the winch hole is actually metal and does come with the bumper. It has a rubber ring around it, which is the black you see.
