My 2004 Jeep KJ has a 42RLE auto 4WD transmission. I bought it used. It has been a GREAT car for almost two years. Twice lately I have had to back up in reverse up a hill. Once we passed a parking slot going down a hill and had to back up and once was slowly backing up over a speed bump. Both times we were just barely on the gas pedal trying to back up very slowly. The transmission jerked a little doing this on both occasions - sort of like it was slipping a little until it seemed to grab. I went to the Jeep dealer and he said it was common and not to be concerned---I was not so sure.....

Is this a common occurrence with this transmission? I don't remember it to have happened before but I am not sure I ever put it in the same type circumstance before....

Thanks

Yes it is common of the 42rle
the reverse gear is not quite low enough
I am not sure you know this or not but the transmission is not 4wd other than the tail housing
it is the transfer case that makes it 4wd
lower axle gears would help in reverse but not going to be worth the money

Yea, the reverse gear just isnt low enough given the weight of the liberty.

Its normal for this tranny.
