After reading posts on here and seeing images of the piece itself, I am going for it to save the $700 labor the dealer wants to charge. I was looking through the TSB and found part numbers for the valve and the gasket. Is there a good source besides going down to the dealer to order these?

Based upon experiences posted on here, I am thinking I have a good idea of what works and what does not.

Thank you.

P.S.

Price of oil continues to decline.

I don't know if Jparts.com would sell/ship those parts or not, but I'd check them out and see. They are one of the cheapest for most everything else I've needed.

Good luck, Godspeed, and remember to take lots of pictures and post up a write-up of the process you go through.

I tried JP Parts, but the search engine kept bringing iPod controllers. I tried ebay last night, but their search engine was down for maintainance  .

I am going to try again, $195 sounds a lot better than $700 for sure. Although spending the day out in the FL humididty isn't going to be fun, I can go to Disney with the savings!

The TSB says you need to replace the EGR and part #05142815AA which is the gasket. For those who have replaced the EGR, did you also replace the gasket as well? The ebay link did not have the part # in the store seach. Does the EGR come with the new gasket?

I actually bought one from there via Ebay. The "buy it now" variety is about $160. They had one for auction for like $130, so I got that one. Unfortunately, since I live in MI, I had to pay the sales taxes on top of that. Mine didn't come with a gasket. It looks like I'll be on the market for a gasket for myself as well. I haven't had to opportunity and/or courage to try to install it yet, so it's still sitting on my workbench.

I just did all this last weekend. I haven't posted the pics and write-up on the process yet but I can start you off with this:
Hallchryslerjeep on Ebay sells them for $159. Good folks to deal with, fast delivery no problemo.
The auction for them is on and off but they still sell them. A fellow named "Justin" seems to be the main person answering the emails. Here is their Ebay presence:
http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/hallchryslerjeep?&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1181
As far as the operation itself goes: Watch out for the 4 bolts that hold the EGR in place - I stripped the head on one and started a thread pleading for help as a result. However, if I had not stripped the bolt, the operation itself was not at all complicated - just a painful pain in the stupid due to the awkward angle and lack of room for your hands. In a nutshell: I removed the battery (1bolt on the bracket) and fuel manager (fuel filter and mount) and then moved the wiring harness (stuck onto the frame by a large clip) and then jammed my hands down there and removed the pipe and the 4 bolts that held it in place. THAT part was a pain and required a great deal of dexterity and what I call "wrenching by braille" because you can't see much of what you are attempting to do. I looked at things with the light and then dove in and felt around.

Of course some others in this forum will rightly tell you to not bother with the silly thing and simply install the SEGR kit and be done with it forever. I, on the other hand, needed a few more scars on my forearm and more reason to be thoroughly frustrated and p$ssed off at this grumpy mule. (I'm tenacious but not bright)

I don't think installing a SEGR kit after the egr is broke will fix anything will it?

Did you replace the gasket?

Keighjeigh...oh boy did I read your post and try to imagine your pain. Out of curiosity...how did you round off that one bolt? Does it need a special socket or it was in such an awkward place that you couldn't get a socket on it securely?

I do plan to do the SEGR.... However, I still have the original EGR in my '06. I don't think the one I have is working quite right. I've lost a little fuel economy and mine doesn't do that shuttering it once used to do when you got on it hard and then let off. It did that for the first 35K miles and the computer just learned how to use it smoothly. I get the shutter now occasionally and only very mild. I suspect mine is clogged a little and stuck open a little. The thing is that it doesn't throw the CEL which is confusing. So, I figure I'll put the shiny EGR and do the SEGR and not ever replace another one.

Anyone try to get parts not listed on Ebay from the Hall dealership? At one point, someone was selling the idler/tensioner pulleys on there a year ago, but I don't think it was them. Since many of use are getting to the point of needing timing belts, various pulleys, and the serpentene belt, it would be nice if someone like them would make them available.

SEGR + mechanically closed EGR works.
SEGR + leaking EGR + blocking plate works.

Works = clean intake, no codes, no CEL, no clogged MAP.

Yes. Just email them about what you want.

Listen to the Ranger - he knows what he's talking about!

Mine was stuck in the open position so I either had to block it or replace it. Since blocking it required getting to it and taking off the pipe feeding it, I decided to unscrew the other 4 screws and just replace the dang thing. I also wanted a working part before I did the SEGR so I had a reference point or in case something happened and I couldn't repair the SEGR, or if it became an issue during sale, or there was a change in emission laws (who knows?) that might require it's temporary removal. That was my own reasoning but in the end it would have been cheaper to simpler and certainly cheaper to just block the thing off. (although I must admit it's nice having the CEL light off as I struggle with building the SEGR )

If it helps, I can pop in and bug Justin at Halls. That's where I bought my little KJ tractor and Justin still owes me a new key since he messed up my cool rock key.

Just let me know.

BTW - thanks for that beautifully simple equation Ranger1. Nicely done.

I just placed the order through their eBay store. Hopefully, I get the part by next Saturday and when I get it, I can actually get 'er done.

I just received my EGR valve from Hall's......No stinkin' gasket. Could I use RTV or re-use the gasket or should I go down to the local dealer and order one?

I am guessing that the coolant hoses are rubber so I can clamp them instead of draining the coolant as the FSM dictates?

Yeah I wrote to Halls first and they said it wasn't included, but said when I ordered they would send one with the order.
The cost is $3.00 for the gasket from them.

Finished the job and..........Jeep still drives like it's broke!!!!

I have not cleared the codes, but I will go over to Advanced tomorrow and see what it's reading. If it reads P0401 and P0299, I am not sure what to do.

Zero power and lots of smoke.
