Why not a flexi-type-fan?
IS the diesel something special that requires a clutch type fan?

Yes, because a Diesel's btu output can increase drastically at any rpm, low or hi - the flexy-thingy flattens out as rpm increases, and resultant air flow is reduced sharply - now, who ya gonna call?

A viscous fan clutch can last for a long time - provided it was built with a little bit of quality to begin with. Still have the original on the '87 MB, and it still works perfectly.

I know it's the original because it has metal fan blades - a couple years later they switched over to plastic blades, even on replacements for previous models.

The A/C condenser can dump a lot of heat into the airstream to the radiator. When I was still using the Scangauge, I saw intake air temps go up by as much as 30 F just from turning on the A/C while driving on the interstate on a summer's day.

Shame we can't use the same type of fan clutch as on the semis - uses air pressure to engage or disengage the clutch, depending on customer preference - except for the temp switch controlling a solenoid, strictly mechanical. In our case, we'd need one that's vacuum actuated.

ORM/SEGR, aux tranny cooler, turning off A/C compressor will help reduce heat load such that when you do get a good fan clutch installed it will have that much easier of a task keeping temps under control.

check out ebay for Envoy Electric Fan Clutch - it's a GM experiment, similar to the new Dodge Cummins with the electric clutch - if the clutch nut dia\thread pitch is same as the Jeep, problem solved: flip a switch when ya need fan - can be wired for thermostat control, also

This is interesting....
Could possibly get rid of the mechanical fan entirely? I would have to assume then that the alternator was beefy enough for a larger load applied for longer periods of time...

Well......I suppose you could get rid of the mechanical fan, but it'd look fairly stupid having an electric clutch screwed onto the waterpump shaft with no fan blades, don'tcha think?

Woa! That thing looks cool. (cooling)
So who's going to give it a try first?

So I guess you won't be first then.
I just picked up my new fan clutch from the stealer so I probably have another 30K miles before I'll need a new one - maybe I'll try it then.
(It came floating around in a thin-walled cardboard box with no padding and was thrown around enough in the UPS truck that the nut was beginning to protrude through the box. They continue to do their best to be the worst)

Need facts: dates of failure, frequency of occurance, percentages involved, etc - oem brand and marquee is important as well

I've changed about 20 of those electric pieces of junk on trailblazers/envoys in the last 5 months(all with the 4.2 I6),all OEM and replaced with OEM.One trailblazer had 2 put in over a 1 month period, the new one just quit. The soliniod in them is junk, they start clicking when going bad.
