So, I'm about to do my transmission service. I know I need the two filter assemblies, the ATF+4, a bunch of RTV, etc. My questions are:

- Do I need to change the flow control valve? It's only 5 bucks and might be partially responsible for my drain-back slow engage issue.
- Does the cooler drain when the pan's off (and I take out the filters and valve)? and do I need to do anything to bleed this after the fact?
- If I'm doing the service without cracking the torque converter, so how much fluid should I expect to use for it and the transfer case together?

Thanks.
Dan

When I changed my fluid I changed the flat filter with the black tube attached and the spin on filter. The flat filter came with a gasket that matched all the holes in the pan so when I put the bolts back in I placed the gasket over all of them and it held the bolts in place while I bolted them back in place, starting in the middle of the pan of course. The spin on filter had to be ordered separately for around $ 11.00 dollars. I let the transmission drain for several hours and I replaced around 9.5 to 10 quarts of valvoline ATF+4 I think that's who makes the mopar fluid for chrysler. Oh the flat filter with the gasket also had a replacement tube seal that screws in to the transmission body I could not get the original out so I just left it in since it did not look damaged in any way.

i would use the mopar filters
the flat one comes with new seal [pull with seal puller & install with CORECT size socket extesion & hammer]
even though it looks ok change it anyway & lube filter tube with atf before installing it.
the spin on filter just like car filter lube seal with atf & hand tighten ONLY

I pulled my pan & both filters & let drain 4 hours
put new filters & seal on at lunch
cleaned pan & fresh atf rtv

filled with atf-4 took like 12 quarts
service fill is listed at 10 pints
overhaul fill is 28 pints

this fixed my "delay"
the spin on filter is ussally what causes it[drainback delay etc]
if you let it drain long enough you wiil be draining almost all of tranny

DO NOT OVERFILL!! take your time & fill it to halfway mark on dipstick

Sounds like the drainback allows a lot more than the "service fill" to get out during the service...

I don't have a seal-puller. Will some carefully-administered vice-grips and a plastic scraper do the job? Also, anyone replace the valve? I already ordered one, so worst case, I'm out 5 bucks till I need it.

Still shopping for the best price on mopar/valvoline ATF+4. wallyworld has quarts for $4.75. for mopar (which is odd in itself). That seems to be the best I've seen retail for the good stuff.

My new seal ring for the flat filter had threads on it. I could not get mine to unthread so I just left it in. I kept the ring for the next filter change.
