On the way to Calico and in running up to Tehachapi Pass from Bakersfield, 200' to 4000' there were spots where foot-to-the-floor the KJ could only do about 50mph. It doesn't seem right but before I look for problems has anyobdy made this stretch and can compare? Or a similar scenario?

Just doesn't seem right.

I don't think I've ever been stuck at 50mph there.

Hi: Were you in 4th or 3rd gear? There are several areas of the Tehachapi Pass that are somewhat steep; I've found that if I shift out of overdrive even on relatively mild hills the going is much easier and I have power to spare. The rpms don't get too high either, in the 3K area. If I stay in OD under a load, the accelerator doesn't seem to make much difference and the transmission will sometimes seek, which is not good if it does it repeatedly. But if you're already in 3rd, then there's something else. When you bought the KJ, how many cylinders did you get? :)

I've a 6, Ted, and an automatic on the 02. That steep spot on Techachapi eastebound had me down in 2nd; no way overdirve. Shoot a couple of RV's passed me.

It's been an onging issue with me. Engine perf over 3000 feet really bites. Engine diag checks out. Even had it done in Payson AZ at 5100 feet.

Even pulling I15 out of Berdoo is sluggish. Fine here at sea level and get 15 mpg.

Yeah, that seems like a problem. When I climb the Cajon Pass, which I do frequently, even in the steepest areas I'm able to do 70 to 75 (in 3rd). But going to Big Bear the back way (highway 18 ) when I get to the steep part I'm in 2nd most of the way. And my mileage has gone way down every time I've added something. From getting 20 on the road originally, I'm down to 15; and that's the best it gets! Of course, I've added several hundred pounds of stuff and bigger tires, but that seems like too much of a decrease. I'm using the stock air cleaner, but maybe a high efficiency one would help.

Yeah, a problem. Wish I knew how to fix it.

just a thought. how many miles are on it? Check for air leaks around the throttle body, and check the cat for clog. It sounds like a breathing problem to me.

Ok thanks. will look for leaks. Runs ok on level ground and elevations unders 2500 to 3000'. Gets 15mpg, which is good considerng all the extras on this.

Have 42000 on it.
