Don't feel bad. If they don't, how can you?

I like how the dieselers stick together, though. Some of them are nice enough to list, over & over, the minimum mods required to get the CRD to acceptable reliability standards. I have even seen these in sig lines. We gassers do not stick together like that (or, as in my case, no gasser specific issues of that nature exist). Either way, being a shinning beacon for those buying used CRD's & in search of answers is an admirable quality.

Oh, and speaking of CRD specific issues ( kinda the topic of the thread, isn't it?), today's page one (as of 1326 EDT) of the CRD section helps out with:

Egr
FCV
Frequent stalling
Fuel leaks
Cac
Serpentine belt issues
glow plug issues
very low MPG
Turbo backlash
torque converter
Lift pumps
MAP sensors
oil entering the intake system
low oil pressure

Yep, just page one. I think this would be valuable info for someone considering a CRD vs V6 KJ purchase.

Now I am off to look at some posts by friendly folks who have thoughtfully provided info that they apparently feel has universal interest, like martinizing your interior...

But before I go, I just have to ask: Is the fact that a very late-model vehicle's EGR has ONLY failed once such a rare feat that is is something to crow about? How bad is an issue that a statistic like this is something to hang your hat on?

Yes and no, I guess. The comments about the help being offered was very serious. When a newb shows up, there seems to be no shortage of dieselers offering help. The CRD "clique" is kind of humorous as I last saw something like that in high school, and everyone involved seems well past that age. I guess laughing might help folks to keep from crying over the issues found by even a brief look at the CRD section. So all & all, it seems like the laughing response has it on points, but there is no KO here.

Well - The mods suggested are to make the CRD hit the 250K mark without issue - as delivered it'll make 100K - but most of us are expecting much more.

and even with the 'bad' problems - most folks don't any issues.

The real frustrating part of the CRD is that because it was a test for Jeep with no real commitment - the dealerships are generally clueless. LOST CRD forum is the only technical resource available.

I mean if I had problems with a gas v6 Liberty - I could find a dozen shops within a 10 mile radius that I would have confidence they could get it running again.
With the CRD - if I could find 1/2 that in a 100 mile radius I'd be surprised. The vast majority of shops would never have seen another CRD and many would never have realized that Jeep made a diesel.

On the one hand I think it's great that LOST is that good - on the other hand - it's sad that there's no one else.

I do feel there are plenty of reasons NOT to buy a CRD. It is nowhere near an appliance like a Toyota/Honda. I have listed many issues I have had with mine waaay back in the day in the CRD section (06-07). The number one issue in my book has always been the crappy dealer service. Now that these are getting out of warranty, this is less of an issue.

I came real close to buying a CRD when they came out, had the list of things I wanted etc. ready to order, moved to Toledo area and met a few people that worked at Jeep living on the street that I moved to .
AFTER talking to them about some issues with the CRD already, plus even they knew it would be a limited run I backed off real quick. I ran Cats in all the Petes I had and would of liked having a Diesel but what I found out it was not for me :( :( :( :( I knew dealer support would not be there so I gave up. glad some people took the plunge though and wish you the best of luck

I see the CRD as a great model in the hands of a capable enthusiast who is willing to do their own work.

X2, I wish I still had mine, but the good news is that buying a used CRD will be easy as the prices for used ones are dropping quickly. I'm seeing them sell down in the $9,000 dollar range for a high mileage CRD. I hope to find one when the time is right..................................Luv me some diesel. Heck, I got a 2.8 CRD ready to drop into a liberty now! :D :D :D :D

I was at Jeep the other day and me and a service tech got to talking about my KJ. He asked if it was a CRD and I said nope, probably would have bought one of they gave me the 0% fin. on it but nope. He said man you dodged a bullet. I asked what he meant and he explained a myriad of problems the CRDs had and how everyone at the dealer was glad they stopped production of em. I knew there were some issues but overall it sounded like a nightmare. But like Matt said, if you are willing and have the know how to deal with any issues that will arise, then go for it if that is what you want. For me, I am glad I haven't had to worry about my KJ and how it runs. If anything the 3.7 KJ has done infinitely better than I expected in every way I can think of.

You diesel guys need to move to Canada. I just heard on Motoring 2008 that in Canada 75% of all new Jeep Grand Cherokees sold are diesels and in the U.S. it is only 5%. They attributed this to the diesel infrastructure as not being as sophisticated in the U.S. yet as it is in Canada and also the higher cost of diesel fuel in the US at 80 cents per gallon over gas.

I say buy a manual that is cheapest then find yourself something like a 3 or 4 liter Cummins diesel and do an engine swap. Then come back on here and post pics for us to drool and gawk over.
