I went to get fuel tonight and I noticed that on my way home no more CEL! For the first time in more than a month I don't have that little amber engine burning a hole in the corner of my eye!

So after I replaced the EGR, both P0299 and P0401 remained. I fixed the split CAC hose and all error codes went away. I hope this helps the next guy who gets the dreaded codes.

JL Rockies,

The dealership should be able to get you replacement hoses in about a day. That is how long it took them to get mine. Based upon the new hoses I received it appears Chrysler has upgraded the Turbo to intercooler hose to something like a Samco. The Intercooler to intake hose is the same as came on the CRD. Cost about $285 if I remember correctly.

If you have a provent or are planning on installing one you should be fine with the new OEM replacements. If you don't have a provent you might want to get the Samco's but you might have to wait a while for those.

Its this one:

I've had it for years, very basic, only displays codes then you have to look them up in a the booklet or online.

handy and cheap, but for more advanced users like myself its starting to fall short.

Thanks for the scanner recommendations.

One more thing happened in this saga; I was driving around for a day with my patched CAC hose and little by little it started to give way. On my way to pick up my new hose, I got another CEL. I replaced the hose and went to Advanced to read the code:

P0101 and P0299. Cleared the codes and they never came back and now it's driving great.

I have learned that a blown hose and trigger many codes P0401, P0299 and P0101 so the moral is make sure your hoses are in good shape, they are a lot cheaper than replacing the other stuff.

Excellent demonstration of fundamental troubleshooting skills. ALWAYS look at the basics first in any system (air, fuel, compression in this case). More often than not, one of those things will either be the culprit, or show you the culprit. Also, the big, obvious things are often the cheapest to check and to fix.

Code readers are great if you know something is malfuctioning, but symptomatic errors are a problem in any mechanical or electrical system.

Glad you're back in business, JL.

I am working on the same problem without the smoke...Keep on posting. Same codes except I now have PO107 instead of PO101 which went away after I cleaned the MAF sensor. It was covered with road grime and an oil mix. This helps...

Thanks,
Jim

I think you cleaned the MAP sensor on the top driver's side of the engine. Just don't want anyone to get confused.
