You didnt give it enough time to engage, Thats it. Now go and try it again and see what happens. Mines even harder to get out of 4wd, sometimes it takes a mile to get it out, and im not kidding. If i put it into partime when im stopped is when its harder to get out. ive found its easier to put it into full time if your in part time and put it back to 2wd when you get on the open road. unhook that front sway bar and see how much more flex you get!

So anyway, apparently the 231 does not have a biased link between the front and rear outputs when not in "locked" mode, so if you do have the 231 my advice prior is incorrect (would be correct if you have the 242 "selec trac).... but here is some good reading material if you want to learn more about the "command trac" or NP231 transfer case :-)

Oh, one other thing I would mention, seeing as how there seems to be some thoughts on this.... There is absolutely no major difference between the 231 the KJ uses and the 231 the Wranglers have used and use. Mechanically they take the exact same part numbers and everything (from my research anyways).

Later,

most 4wd's will do the same thing,,,unless you have lockers front and rear........i have been stuck a few times in a few different 4wd's...and i had fun every time....but the right front and left rear would spin..or the left front and right rear would spin.....the other tires could be on the ground not moving.....these days (4wd) dosnt mean 4x4...as in lockers front and rear....even my 76 cj7 is the same way...and its full time 4wd with the th400 and the quad-track t case......my lib does have the locking (posi) rear end....found that out in the first snow.......
