Has anyone experienced their starter being a little noiser on cold mornings? Mine seems to have an extra whine but only on cold mornings......

Ditto, usually lasts 5 seconds and stops. I did bring it to the dealer the first time I heard it and they said it was normal.

Definitely normal - get use to your KJ making all kinds of weird sounds in the cold weather.

relieved! As I thought my KJ was the only one doing that. It started doing it as soon as the temps dropped below 20s

I had the same question. Mine does it too. I guess I won't worry about the power steering going out if it's normal.

Thanks!

Does your all's power steering ever cut out when cold. Sometimes if i turn the steering wheel really fast when i first start it, it will cut out. I about broke my finger the other morning. It was really cold and i turning it really fast with one finger, almost broke it sideways. Felt great!!

It is the starter motor pinion gear remaining on the flywheel after the engine starts. When it's cold the gear doesnt retract off the flywheel after start as quickly, and what you hear is that gear spinning.

I had the same problem, my starter eventually crapped out. I think it had alot to do with sand buildup from beach driving. I had it rebuilt and have never had an issue since. If I remember right, the guy who rebuilt mine said it had something to do with the clutch packs used in the starter. He was not able to get the Liberty clutch assembly when I had mine rebuilt, he used the assembly out of a 300M or something like that.

It's the power steering pump, not the starter. There's a TSB (19-005-03) for the power steering pump making noise on startup during cold mornings. It states to drain the pump and refill with ATF+4 instead of power sterring fluid. If you're still under warranty and the dealer tells you it's normal then give them the TSB number and insist they follow it.
