Can you believe I brought my jeep to the dealer (I try NEVER to do).
I was getting a couple little things done and I wanted a price quote to change my front struts. Well......they said $470 but we can't because you have a lift on it, plus there is a recall for the ball joints and we can't do that either because of the lift. THEY CAN'T DO THAT, can they. Not complete a recall because you have a lift on your truck????

I would think they wouldnt be able to, I'm not sure how to find out about it though.

Is this a new or recent recall on the Ball Joints? Just curious, I didnt know anything about it and I'm wondering if I should get mine checked.

They must do the recall. A recall has nothing to do with your jeep, its something that is wrong with all the libertys.

yup recall is a must.

replacing struts under warrenty, yeah void with lift. But if you PAY to get them replaced then they are dumb.

Yup, I think they need to preform the recall no matter what. Don't bother changing out the factory struts with the same. There are much higher quality ones by OME and Rancho.

I had them install Rancho struts when the dealer replaced the ball joints. I have a 3 1/2 inch lift (that the dealer put on for me). They charged me $60 to install the Ranchos that I bought online. No charge for the ball joints,, it's a recall.

Don't they install some kind of heat shield on that recall? I had mine done over a year ago but didn't know much about this stuff then and still don't but I don't believe they actually did anything.

Yes, part of the recall was adding the heat shield. You can check by your VIN on the jeep website if you need it. The dealer supposedly did mine when the wife went in for a quick oil change. The only proof I have is the heat sheild is there.

Look around for intructions on how you can just check them yourself. Mine are OK for now but when they go I'm going to put in greasable MOOGs.

Okay, entered my VIN and it said no recall on my KJ. I bought my 04 Reny in September 04. Any idea if I may have been fixed before they sold it new?

Joe,
I have an 04 and the dealer just replaced my lower balljoints at 18,425 miles under warranty. The drivers side was creaking when I turned the steering wheel.

Anyone have a pic or a good description of what this heat shield should look like. I don't think mine were changed out.

You can see a heatshield in the tech forum under the ball joint replacement post here http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=3317

Look for the picture with the ball joint puller on the LBJ. You can see the heat shield to the upper right of the puller between the LBJ and the brake rotor. It's just a thin sheet of metal.

FYI...
If any dealer tells you he will do the wanrranty work and the lower ball joints...Just get the number to the local customer service rep. I can tell you right now that no one is going to get refused on a recall or there is going to be a huge problem.

Also...I will say this again. ALL KJS HAVE A LOWER BALJOINT PROBLEM....THERE HAS BEEN NO FIX. The heat shield was adding and thart should have been the end of the story but ball joints have failed on many KJs that had the heat shield.

KJs from 2001 to 2006 have the exact same problem...nothing is different except some of the older ones do not have the heat shields.

This is still a problem and will contiue to be a problem no matter what year you have or even if they have been replaced once before. It's just a matter of time before YOURS fail as well. This is something that all KJs owners need to watch for or have checked ever so often.

Sorry to come across so strong about this but it is a real problem we all just have to keep in mind and deal with is. Later...Clint

Dave,

That picture helped a lot. They didn't do the recall on mine based on that picture. I took it in over a year and a half ago too. Plus I just looked on the jeep site with my VIN and it shows no outstanding recalls. I love my stealership. It's an early 02 so there's no reason they shouldn't have replaced them.

Clint,

Do the aftermarket LBJ's hold up better than OEM?

Thanks

Then why replace them with the MOOG ones, and why hasn't an aftermarket company come up with anything?

I really think a HUGE recal is coming for DC and i think they know it. I really would like to see one, but i feel sorry for DC. I buy their jeeps and cars b/c i like them, and i hate to see them have trouble. But if its putting me and other people on the road in danger, then it needs to be done.

Could they just recal the lower ball joint with a better greasable one?

How can I tell if mine are in bad shape. Do I get the wheel off the ground and pull and push on something? What am I looking for? Newbie  :?:
