Okay, so this is NOT JEEP RELATED, but it is diesel related...

Warning: This is going to be a somewhat lengthy rant. I'm sorry but I need
to get it out of my system and no one seems to understand.

Here at work, I have a '05 Duramax 3500. I had one of my guys take it to
the nearby Chevy dealer for a brake job. This is the same dealer we take
all our vehicles to (minus the GMC 6500's and generators) for all our service
and repair.
It should have been just an average brake job. Just new pads and rotors,
front and rear.
It turned into a $5000+ repair job!!!
WTF!!!

They said they hydro-boost was bad and that the high pressure line was
leaking. They said they found other deficiencies but I had already stopped
listening by that point.
Excuse me, but if the hydro-boost was bad, this truck would not be able
to stop! For weeks ago I towed a 10K lbs trailer and it stopped just fine.
A day before being taken to the dealer it was driven 200 miles (no trailer)
and stopped just fine. This truck is fully inspected weekly and before leaving
for any mission. Power steering fluid has always remained at normal levels
and no leaks found anywhere. So how can the hydroboost lines be leaking?

At this point it didn't matter. It was out of my hands. The dealer had already
submitted the quote to GSA and was pending approval. The truck has been
sitting there for two weeks waiting for GSA to approve the repairs.

Now, its not MY truck and its not MY money. So why do I care?

Well other than the fact that I need THIS truck to execute a mission NLT 0600
monday, I feel that this dealership is trying to pull a fast one.
I feel that because they see "U.S. Government" plates that they can just
write up whatever they want to and Uncle Sam will pay for it.
Well guess what? Uncle Sam is not paying for it. Or at least not untill GSA
gets two more competetive quotes. (remember, lowest bidder)
Meanwhile, I may not be able to execute my mission as planned and time and
money (your tax dollars) is being wasted.

Like I said, we take almost all our vehicles to this dealer. This is a BIG dealership
that is nearby and in most cases offers fast turnaround service. (we really
cant afford to have any of our vehicles tied up in service for more that a few days)
Although we have had issues with them in the past, never to this extent.
And hopfully never again.

Update:
I was just informed that GSA has had this truck towed to another shop.
An independant shop no less. I called the shop and talked to the mechanic.
He said that pads and rotors will be replaced and could not find anything
wrong with the hydroboost. Said that pads and rotors should be completed
today and will then do a proper test drive to ensure that everything functions
properly, including the hydroboost. Finally, someone who know what they
are doing.

Dealerships are not selling many vehicles now. I have heard they make the most profit off of service anyway.

They are probably trying to boost their decreased sales revenue with increased service revenue.

They had better be careful. I'm guessing that a terse letter from the GSA to the dealership, GM, and ASE might have a rather sobering impact on their business.

Unlike Ambulance Chasers, Corporate Lawyers do not enjoy litigation, they want to read and write contracts and go home at night. Stupid stunts like what this dealer pulled will shake them up and generate some serious correspondence behind the seen. All of the letters, memos, and emails internally and between GM and the Dealer will be put into the dealers file and if it comes down to making a decision on which dealer to not renew the franchise on, it will be ASTA LA VISTA for the turkey!!
The letter needs to be straight to the point and site the facts like you did in the Rant, it does not need to be from the top command a Sgt, Supt, Foreman, Crew Leader would be good enough. Don't expect to see any fire works since a plan like this is more like a bunker buster than an A bomb, it starts a cascading collapse.
