Your going to do it in that?

How many times have you heard "Your going to do it in that?" or some variation when refering to the KJ.

Yesterday I was 4 wheeling and was talking to some guys that had lifted superduties. All I kept hearing was that "you can't do it in that" "you need atleast 35s"
but everytime they said it about an obstacle i cleared it. shut them up real quick. they acually sorta got mad

The reason THEY NEED 35s is because their approach, departure, and breakover angles would be cr@p without them. :wink:

You are right about a bigger,longer rig, especially a long-bed pick-up, needing mor elift to do the same thing. And more lift = higher center of gravity=more likely to tip=etc.... And the turning radius of those trucks! yuck. And those big axle center sections hanging down mean that the need 37's to egual the ground clearance of a jeep on 32's.

I've seen a number of jeeps on 33's and even 31's embarrass big trucks that the owners thought were the best rigs out there. There is a reason why jeeps are the most popular on the trail. On top of that, the KJ's wheelbase of around 104" is considered very good for all-round wheeling.

OK, my newbieness is showing for sure :oops:

I understand approach and departure, but what is "breakover" angle?

Breakover – let’s say you drive over the crest of a hill. Your front wheels are now on the downhill side and your back wheels are still on the uphill side. The higher your breakover angle the less chance you just high centered your Jeep in the middle. Does that make sense?

Basically draw a straight line from your rear tire to the middle of your rocker panel and then another from the same point on the rocker panel down to the front tire. The angle that those two lines create is the breakover.

I was recently at Tellico and followed a Wrangler on 36 inch tires.

This is a sample of the sort of obstacles we climbed.

A long wheel base pickup would need very large tires to clear such a obstacle because of the breakover angle. What happens with a long wheel base vehicle is that the front wheels are over the obstacle before the rear starts to climb it. See the potential problem?

ppl always ask 'is the liberty really a jeep' im like wtf.. ive taking ours all over the place w/no problems.. we love ours..

This Thread cracked me up when I read it !... Becuase I have heard the exact phrase !

Last December the LOST AZ guys showed a few of us LOSTWEST guys around Sedona AZ. (man what a great trip...actually check out my monkier for one of the pics !)

There was a lady that said " Your not going to take your cars out there ...are you ! ?" I swear...it was a crack up...it was heard several times that day on the CB. The same lady "spotted" Vern over an obsticle ...im not kidding :lol:

People are always watching us run obsticles (I suspect theyare secretly hoping for KJ carnage...) only to be "surprised"

But, I think everyone is kinda guilty of it once in a while...I'm always suprised to see an H2 running trails too so It's not much different than the KJ offroad . The best is to run 20 Lifted KJ's past them and watch their expressions change :shock:

I'd be surprised to see an H2 on the trails too! Things are way to big and pricey. Come to think of it the last H2 I saw had something like 28"" rims with 2" tires and spinners... now that new H3 on the other hand..

I got the very same thing this weekend. I went with a buddy of mine down to Kerr Dam and we pulled up next to some guys on four wheelers and inquired about the trails conditon, (we had some rain the day before) they asked where we were planning on going and when i told them they said, You're taking that??? Mind if we follow...

I had this same sort of thing happen last week. A co-worker that owns a Wrangler (TJ) that is stock except for 32" BFG MT tires was telling of a cool hiking trail that you needed a JEEP to get to the trailhead. Apparently you had to drive up a creekbed with 10" deep water and had to climb up over a two foot high waterfall that would stop a pickup truck, or other vehicle. I asked where the trail was at, and then went and did it that night in my stock Liberty. The waterfall was intimidating, because with 10" deep water flowing over it you couldn't see exactly what you were climbing. The Liberty eased right over it though, and never scraped anywhere, or even slipped a tire. The next day I told that co-worker that I had taken his advise and driven to the trailhead and hiked the trail (great hiking trail by the way). He asked what I had used to drive to the trailhead, and then in the same breath said "You didn't do it in your Liberty did you"? When I said that I had, and hadn't had any problems, he seemed real disappointed, as if his REAL JEEP TRAIL wasn't so big and bad anymore, LOL.

Kaboom.

Coming down a trail in NH about a year and half ago, there were four of us, (a Grand and 3 KJ's). We come around a corner and meet up with about 20 ATV's. They asked us where were comng from, and we told them "the top". They then asked how we got up there, and we said "the same way we are coming down". There was a pause, and then... "You went up there in those?" :shock:

i finally went and got pics of my weekend excursion, however i didnt have any of me stuck or falling into that mud hole. It doesnt look that bad it just didnt have a bottom.....Should be able to follow the link below.
