I took the CRD to a stereo shop that installs all kinds of stuff to get a remote start put in. I got a viper that was made to start diesels. They have had it all day and now they need to put a key under the dash to get it to start. Without a key near it, it wont fire off. They say that it is probably because of my Scanguage 2 of edge trailjammer tho...

anyone else ever put one on? These guys are a nationally known shop and not some fly-by-night crew.

Thanks,
Travis

When I had a remote start installed on my last vehicle, one of the first things they told me was that if my key had a "chip" embedded in it, they would need an exact copy (not just the valet key) with the chip & that it would be installed in a secure place. They said that it was only the keys that had chips that needed this, and it was because the car wouldn't start unless the "key talked to the computer" (their exact words). :? Don't know if that helps at all.

Total BS, add on modules have nothing to do with it. They need the key because without a chipped key the ignition will only stay on for several seconds. Your owners manual explains this as part of the security system. you will need to be fairly close to the vehicle when you use the remote start or purchase another transmitter to leave in the vehicle but this will also disable the security feature.

I had the 'factory Jeep' (aka Audiovox) one installed when I bought my CRD. I don't recall them needing to put another key in it or anything. But I have heard that before on PATS-like equipped vehicles.

this is bs! The audio shops now have modules that connect to the remote starter that have the transponder # programmed into it so you don't have to hide a key in the dash. You do need to have both keys with the vehicle at the time of installation though.

Travis,
They are most definitely pulling your leg.
I used to own my own business installing remotes.
I am still a dealer for several brands. Send me a PM and I can get you all the info you need to fix the problem yourself.
I cant believe a shop that has any knowledge installing these units wouldn't know to install a transponder bypass.
They are apparently incompetent and you should ask for your money back. You can do this job yourself.

For anyone else that may be searching the forums for info on this subject:

Many vehicles have a transponder "chip" inside the key. This chip transmits a radio signal to an antenna mounted around/near the key cylinder. The chip is passively powered - meaning there is no direct power supply connected to the key. Instead, the key cylinder emits a magnetic field which creates just enough power to allow the chip to turn on and broadcast its information. Encoded in this radio signal is a unique code. The vehicle's computer is able to learn a few (6 in the case of the Jeep) codes, and will recognize them as being a valid coded key.

In order to bypass the transponder feature for aftermarket remote starters, you have a couple of options.

You can use a "universal" solution which does require you to place a key under the dash. Usually the key is enclosed inside a box that is only powered when the remote start is activated. They box picks up the signal from the key, and passes the signal out through a wire loop that is wrapped around the key cylinder. You can use an existing key, or purchase a new key expressly for this purpose. It doesn't need to the be "an exact copy" as mentioned in an above post. The new unique key will just be added to the system as 1 of the 6 possible that the computer will remember. The installer should be using a universal style box and not simply attaching a key next to the antenna/cylinder. Doing so would compromise the security system all of the time instead of only when the remote starter is needed. Also, there is a possibility of the vehicle's computer hard locking. This occurs when the computer sees too many codes (1 from the key under the dash and 1 from the normal key in the cylinder). On some older models, this would hard lock the computer and basically make the car unstartable. Since this is a bad thing, many new models will just shut the security feature off so that the driver isn't stranded. Again, this compromises the built in security.

The other option is to use a new style bypass kit. These kits don't require a key to be placed under the dash as they have a transponder chip built in. You will actually program the box as an additional key. The computer just recognizes the code as being a valid key. Depending on the vehicle, this bypass may either need to transmit its signal through an antenna loop wire placed around the key cylinder, or can "talk" directly to the vehicle through the databus.

As far as remote starts that are "made for diesels" - most any name brand remote starter on the market should have a diesel mode. Do not get sucked into paying extra for a diesel specific model. It is just a matter of which option they enable on the remote. Some brands have an option to tie into the "wait to start" light and will only begin cranking after the light goes out. Other are just a simple 10-12 second timer. The remote will turn on the ignition then wait for 10-12 seconds before cranking the starter in an effort to let the glow plugs cycle. The CRD Liberty cycles so fast, you could probably use the "gasoline engine mode" without a problem since most starters power the ignition to 2-3 seconds before cranking anyway.

Thanks for the info Longview.
Everything works fine now. They tried to progam the transponder with the 2 keys, but it wouldn't accept the program. One of my keys was not an original, but was programmed off of the 2 originals. Who knows.
They wired the wait to start into the light on the dash. They have a real cheap basic kit that didn't have that option, which is why i said it was for diesels.
It is nice, but now that I have it installed, its 60 degrees out.

Yeah, thanks for the info Longview. Could you or anyone recommend a good remote car starter for the CRD. I would like to order it online and be able to install myself.
