Hi fellow jeepers I have a bit of a problem. My 05' CRD started to act funny today. While im driving it acts as if I was feathering the throttle up an down. When I accelerate it drives in bursts and while I am cruising on the highway it surges also. the rpms will go up and down about 200 rpm. The engine light came on and it blows a lot of black smoke now. My lib has 62K on it. I changed the fuel filter back in the summer and I clean the MAP sensor regularly. I had the ORM for a while but I plugged the sensor in a few weeks back because I have been getting terrible fuel mileage lately and I wanted to see if it would get better. Last winter I was averaging 19mpg now i am getting between 14 and 18 mixed highway and city. Any opinions to what the problem is would be great so I dont have to take it to the dealer and get raped in charges. Thankyou

Bad fuel or EGR stuck open, blown turbo hose. There is a lot to check. Any codes??

If your fuel filter was dirty the new one might be also. In other words some bad fuel. Or....6 million other things!

I had this problem when I bought my KJ,especially on hills,my fuel head was losing prime.check plunger on fuel head, push on it,if its not hard push repeatly until firm. After that check your fuel filter,if these don't work start looking around fuel head for"weeping" this will be were your pressure is going. These are easy things you can do at home.By all means check for codes.Maybe a lift pump is needed? My 05 has 85,000 miles, 32,000 on WVO.These are very simplistic fuel heads, similar to old Mercedes,If thats what is bad,you can fix in your drive way.good luck................H

Surging is one sign of air leaks. Pump up the primer and see if you are spurting air out the bleeder when you crack it open. If you installed a lift pump, the primer should be very firm when you push on it, if not your lift pump is not working.

It is not the fuel filter. Plugged fuel filters don't cause black smoke. When the fuel filter is plugged it is unlikely to surge on the highway, it usually just sputters and dies. A plugged air filter will not cause surging or black smoke either. Air in the fuel system causes White smoke.
The symptoms described are consistent with a blown out CAC hose. Remove the hose between the turbo charger and the inter cooler. Look at the bottom of the hose particularly well for small cracks or tears. Oil from the CCV collects at the low point of the hose and softens the rubber. The updated ones from Chrysler are supposed to be resistant, or you could get one of the new (expensive) ones from Samco. If it is indeed the CAC.

Warning! Image

I have been having an intermittent problem with white smoke. I suspected fuel quality issues, but now I am thinking its air in the line based on this thread. Should the plunger on the fuel manager head stay firm forever after you pump it up and bleed the air off? Since I don't have a lift pump installed I figured it would just soften up as fuel flows through the head. Is this line of reasoning flawed?

Fuel problems are not intermittent, it will run like crap through the whole tank. The plunger on the fuel head will go soft after a very short time if you are sucking air (which you probably are if you own a CRD). How long since you changed the fuel filter? Why don't yo throw a lift pump on it? Even if that isn't your problem now, it is cheap and easy insurance against future problems with air.

To everyone who said turbo hoses thanks becuase both of the intercooler hoses were split. I went with the factory ones for now since I needed them immediately and the local dealer had them in stock. Thanks again for the feedback.

Just replaced it and it was identical to the old one. One NIC higher but no apparent material difference. ProVent is on the way...
