I have done both , but 3 or 4 minutes is enough, moving they will warm up faster than sitting still running, diffs, trans does nothing until you roll anyways, if I am parked and ice on the windshield, I will start it, scrape the windows and roll out, . Mine this morning 30 degrees out, ran 2/ 3 minutes took off and less than 1.5 miles it was throwing heat, ideling 10 minutes just wastes gas , although it does feel good,

I was just thinking about this on the way to school today as it was the first day I have had to scrape my windows this fall/winter. I generally start it long enough to clear the windows of ice and proceed reasonably slow for the first few blocks (usually until the temp needle is to the first tick). Then its good to go. Love the heaters in the KJ by the way!

I live in eastern Canada where it can get as low as -20 C in February. Typically I'll start my vehicle then scrape the frost off the windshield. I've seen some people use a remote starter 1/2 an hour before they leave the yard just so they can skip that step.

I've never been a fan of engine block heaters. I always seem to forget to unplug them before driving out the driveway (DOH!) When I was young and couldn't afford a new battery I used a battery blanket in the wintertime. Truth be told if you have a good battery then you wouldn't need a battery blanket.

I usually let my Jeep (and all my vehicles, actually) warm up for a few minutes before driving, mainly due to the fact that I get a clatter (for lack of a better word) for a few seconds when I first start it up.

Long enough for the idle to come down is long enough for me...then I just drive easily until the temp gauge starts moving. The KJ builds heat very quickly. On really cold days, I have noticed that the 1-2 shift in the NSG 370 is kinda balky. Sitting still with the engine running doesn't help, only driving.

I have the factory installed block heater and a heated garage. It gets cold up here, really cold. If plugged in I still start it up a few min before leaving just to let the windows defrost and the seat to heat up. I even get to plug or park in a garage at work. Not unheard of to see -40 F on the evic in the morining.

It doesn't get near that cold around here, speaking of which we got a possibilty of getting an inch of snow tomorrow. That means everybody will freak out when driving. Every time it snows here all the news stations go out and report on the roads, its crazy.

Pretty funny. That's how it was when I was growing up in WI. We just roll with it here. The first time The local school shut down due to snow in the last 30 years was '03. We got 7 feet of snow in 72 hours. The tourists were freaking out. No way into town, no way out. I was pulling escilades and tahoes out with a 91 Isuzu Pick up.

Live in Ottawa Canada. Alway's found with my Jeeps. (On #6) As long as you have a good battery, start it up, then clean the windows to give the oil pressure a chance to build up, then drive slowly for the 1st few km's and everything shoud be fine. I have found that synthetic oil makes a big difference when starting an engine at -25C.

Is it hard to install a block heater. How does it install??

It's not too hard. I had to change one once in a car i once owned. You may want to pay a mechanic though since it is messy. You have to drain all the coolant. The block heater just fits in a hole in your block and you just screw it in place. It basically installs itself like a wing nut.

I usually dont warm up my jeep. I just drive slow & it seems to warm up quick enough on the drive.

I have a 2-way alarm/remote starter... It is the coolest darn thing... I can set the remote starter to any time and it will start up automatically!
I can also check and see if my KJ is locked from up to a 1/4 mile away...
And since it was installed, Whenever I turn the KJ off all of the doors Unlock.. I Don't know if it was supposed to do that, But I like it! The only bad thing is it has a picture of a corvette instead of a jeep...
here's a little video I took with my phone..

i usually let mine warm up 5 mins or so when its cold out. i figure there is less risk in busting a radiator (freeze up) when going down the road when the water hasnt had time to warm up a little. ive seen to many friends back in school jump in their trucks at 20deg or less and drive off instantly only to see them on the side of the road 2 miles out with steam bellowing out from the hood.

and i think its just better on the metals in the engine to expand a bit and let the oil circulate a little before going.
