I've seen people break d60's, 8.8's, you name it.

And although the D30a seems way weaker than it should have been even with a collar, I don't think I'll be going collar-free anytime soon.

I don't think the collar helped you get home. I drove mine about 12 miles after I blew it up. Made some nice sounds but, it didn't keep me from getting it home.

Unlike when the first housing blew, taking a solid chunk about 2 1/2" X 4" from the rear of the housing and making all kinds of racket in 2 wd, this time with the collar on, a 2" X 2 " chunk blew out in front of the collar and was totally quiet on the 60 mi. drive home in 2 wd.

i completely agree.. .the collar is cheap insurance for now. i see you have a 6 spd as well.. if we grenade a front diff it could help us out some.. most have 3.73's.. and we have 3.55's so all we'd have to do is change the rear gears after replacing the front diff. to have a gear ratio closer to stock with larger tires

Yep, 3.73's bring a 6spd back to factory gearing with 31's.

Just a heads up for you guys that just installed an aluminum collar or are about to install one. Make sure you put some antiseize on the allen head bolts that are steel and being screwed into aluminum before the corrosion sets in..... Yeah, I forgot to :!:

I played heII trying to get the collar apart and off, and the housing would not clear the front cross member to come out with the collar on, short of pulling the lower passenger side control arm , which I really wasn't in the mood to do. That front bolt on the driver side housing support bracket is put in to where you can not pull it out, short of dropping the driverside lower control arm. Had they put the head of the bolt in facing the other direction, the whole bracket could have been dropped and no problem getting the housing out with the collar on.

Yeah OK, so I'm old and I'm tired from wrenching all day and had to rant a little.

No, not that one. I walked up that one and down the other side.

Ray's Kj, however, got hung up on that one and had to get strapped in order to back down it.

That rumor about Calmini and a steel housing has been around since 04....I'm still waiting :!:

i'd be interested in the front diff for sure.. although your front diff probably has a lot of miles on it.. and a lot of wheeling miles on it.. hmmm...

I cant think of any hills that you (nick) would have problems on there exect for a real slick one coming up outta the jeep swallow area... that one was tough because it was so slimmy.. you arnt talking about robocon's last stand are you? i wouldnt think you'd have any problem getting up that

Well I now know what the sound of a D30a diff going BANG  . Not a good sound and my wallet jumped out of my pocket and to hide. I drove around 75 miles that night to get home in 2 wd no sounds. The next morning i wash all mud off it (top and under) took it to the dealer and they are putting a new one in under 5yar 100'000 km protection plan :D .
I was thinking of putting a collor on then it happened.First time out with the lift on .Do you think this will be a wast of time or what.
this was the hill.

Probably.Didn't mean to imply it would make it impossible.Just easier to avoid. It's the slip/grab that shock loads the diff and kills it.Along with the locker and tires a gentle right foot and line choice has helped me a great deal.

No, I didn't mean that you implied it would prevent it, just curious to know if anyone has. I know that people with a front locker have blown their CVs but not sure about a diff. I heard front lockers really stress CV axles too.
