Ok, another update.

My mom& dad and sister, etc are ready to Go. They have a pair of Jeeps reserved for the 27th so we are ready to rock! :D

Just curious... who will be driving the other Jeep, do they have any off road experience?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Vern... are you going to post up some of the other trails you had in mind in and around Sedona? I'd like to check them out.

Thanks,
AJ

Mom & dad in one and Sister and her family in the other. No, none of them have any off road driving experience so we need to keep it on the easier end of the wheeling level.

...when i originally posted, I thought you were driving. While Broken Arrow and Soldier Pass are the most scenic, they can be a little hairy for a beginner, both rated Difficult for some ledges.

Here's what I wrote in part on the previous page....

...both Broken Arrow and Soldier Pass are very scenic but rated "Difficult" in the Wells book due to some rock ledges and the infamous "Steps" on Broken Arrow (which can be bypassed). He goes on to say that, "many stock high clearance SUV's can make it". I've driven them in a stock height Wrangler with minor scraping. IMO the "Difficult" rating is over rated and anyone with off road experience will have no problem in a rental jeep".

Do you think they will be up for it?

Anyone have pics of the "difficult" spots?

I suspect that if "stock" vehicles can tackle it then it won't be too bad and worse case, I or my wife will drive over those sections.

As long as the trails we are doing link up well w/ one another and get us to some cool views/scenery, etc that you can't see during the normal road based sightseeing tours, then I say lets go for it.

The main thing my mom asked was that we don't do any narrow ledges, etc. where a fear of heights would mess w/ anyone. (buncha newbs! lol)

All of these pics were taken on Broken Arrow:

Some of the scenic stuff you can see from the highways but it does help to get offroad and closer to the sights. I'll check the VJC site for some write-ups on the Sedona trails as soon as I can get on it (looks like they're doing some server work right now).

Here are some more pictures that Russ and Casey took a year or so ago:

Notice the ruts worn into the rock from the countless trips made by the jeep tour companies. There are a few other obstacles to have fun on but all have bypasses. If folks don't feel comfortable doing 'The Steps' they can just run back down the way they went up.

I'm inviting the So-Cal folks, hoping we can get a few of them to come on out too.

Having been to the Sedona area I would recomend the Soldier Pass trail, which is fairly EASY. The Devils Kitchen spur of the SP main trail has a ledge or two, but in a JK rental I don't see a problem. The Broken Arrow trail isn't all that tough either, especially if you by-pass the steps. But if you're in a JK rental....why not just go down steps, it's all down hill.
The other two mentioned above - Van Derin Cabin and Scnebly Rd. are 2WD and both totally cool.
If your looking for scenery - these are the places.

A week to go! Getting excited now! :D

So who is still IN for this?

BTW, PM'd AZKJ to ask if they would post up details, and such in a new thread in here.

Nope... no snow, just a little muddy.

Will you be coming?

I have to work the day after Christmas, plus we are visiting relatives in Nor. Cal. over that weekend.
We also have a run on Jan 1 if JJ dosen't break his Jeep.
I have been wanting to get over to the Florance Jct. area and run Box Cyn, the Coke ovens and maybe up to the Martinez cabin...sometime.
