When I was installing my Rusty’s lift kit, I noticed the rear pads have worn down and need to be replaced. I have 50K miles but the front pads look good. This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that the rear pads went first. I thought most of the braking was to the front and thus they would wear at a higher rate.

Has anyone had this issue?

Thanks

I would venture to say he has discs since it's an 03.

I had a Silverado with rear disks and somthing that Chevy called Dynamic Rear Porportioning. I replaced the rears twice and never had to replace the fronts. The Truck manufacturers are finding ways to use the rear brakes more these days to increase the tow rating of these vehicles but they have yet to increase the size of the rear pads so they wear out faster than the fronts. The fronts on the silverado had twice as much area as the rears.

I got the 4 wheel antilock disk brake upgrade when I purchased it. It does have the tow option but I have only towed with it a handfull of times.

The Dynamic Rear Porportioning makes sense.

Rear ceramic pads at Napa are $79. All the other stores are around $50 but it will take 4-5 days to get in. some said they don't even have them in their east coast wharehouses. Sounds like not many people are changing the rears.

Looks like TAZ may be right. Jeep calls the braking system "Three-Channel ABS: Features Electronically Variable Brake Proportioning, 4 Low Mode Calibration"

I picked up may $80 pads and could not believe how small they are. I had bigger pads on an Escort (not proud of the Escort part).

Found the following on the Internet:

When the brake pedal is pressed, full hydraulic pressure goes to the back wheels. The computer monitors deceleration rates for each wheel and operates solenoids to reduce pressure at the rear wheels before they reach the point of lock up. In reality, this is very much like ABS system operation, but the programming reacts differently and a wheel does not have to lock before activation occurs. Dynamic is the key word, with the brake pressure continually changing to stop the vehicle the best. Regardless of load, traction, or braking speed, Dynamic Rear Proportioning prevents the rear wheels from locking, and provides optimum braking; yet another advantage of today's electronic vehicle systems.

I replaced my brakes at 65K on my '03 Renegade. The back breaks were worn considerably more than the front. However, I do do a lot of towing during the summer months.

My rear pads were about $20 and the front pads were about $55. I went with HAWK pads in the front. Couldn't find any performance pads for the rear so I went with AutoZone cheap ones. I also replaced my rotors with a set that were slotted and cross drilled. Picked them up off of eBay for about $240.
