I have a stalling problem in my 1976 cj7, i has the 304,with the th400 and the quad transfer case. it has started this around late oct..it stated with just a stall here or there,,then i went to eisenberg on oct 31 and after i locked the transfer case with the emergency drive,it would stall like crazy on load mostly,,,i could idle into the mudhole i was playin in and as soon as i hit the gas....stall...start it then try again....stall....so i tried to figure it out then,,but no avail....on the way home no problem...the i got some more parts..only one for the fuel system,a new fuel pump...but the rest were steering and axle parts, and others..I got it back the other day and it ran great on the way home, about 20 miles or so...the next nite i drove,,it stalled 6 times within 3 miles..so i thought water in the tank..btu after dropping the tank,,its clean,,it looks bran new inside....after it was all done....still stalling.....i dont know what it could be. the only other thing i could think of is a vaccum leak in the emergency switch???ill ahve to plug the vaccum and see if that helps.. does anyone have any ideas? i know its not the kj,,but i know you guys, and girls know about other jeeps too...any thoughts?

My Dad's 77 F250 Camper with the 460 did that all the time. Have you checked all the springs and the float in the carburator?

We could not get any Carb to last more than 4 months on that 460... My 75 with the 360 on the otherhand ran like a top!!! to bad the frame was twisted and body rotten  but at least it ran!!!

Best truck I ever had!!

do you have a vacuum secondary? I know I put a new intake and carb on my Dad's 1962 Galaxy (Big block baby) we had a similar problem with the vacuum secondary. It's because with a new intake manifold you loose vacuum. That or you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Which could've developed after the install of the new intake. I know in 1974 cars became clogged with emissions. I am not sure exactly when the trucks got it-if it was '77 or '76 but it could be a bad smog pump or air pump whatever they call it. May even be a clogged catalytic converter if your Jeep ever had one (that is probably a '77-'78 thing though).

with all the mods to the motor, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a vacuum problem. Maybe get something with mechanical secondaries instead (a bit spendy). Remove a vacuum line and put a test gauge on it (you should be able to rent this at an auto parts store). I had a vacuum leak on my 1983 AMC Eagle, it took me a while to find it, but it ran amazingly better when I fixed it. I wasn't stalling, but the carb was sputtering a bit.

quote: "and edelbrock performer carb, 500 cfm"

Problem solved. No flaming intended at all but that has got to be the worst carb. ever created....well maybe not the worst. 8)

I had a '79 CJ w/304 V8 (Edel Perf. 500cfm) and a '83 Z28 350ci (Edel. Perf. 750cfm). I tried and tried and tried and tried to get that carb to run correctly on either rig and never got it down, even with help from several people. I gave up on them and switched to a quadra-jet and life was good after that. I just couldn't believe how much better they ran. I took the Edel carb out and shot it with my 50 gauge muzzle loader....several times.

Mechanical secondaries on that carb correct? ....hmm...might check the vacuum advance for the dist to see if you have a pinhole leak.

That hes got vacuum secondaries so it could be that, but you could be on to something with the distributor. Maybe it's time to make the switch to HEI or another electronic ignition. That would make it a lot more reliable and probably gain some power too.
