First oil change this weekend using Mobil1 0W-40 for 6.99/qt. Couldn't find a Wix so went with the Purolator wannabe. Also changed the fuel and air filters with NAPA Gold.

What makes you think that your 0W-40W mobil1 Base Group 3 so called synthetic oil is not made from dino juice?

OK, I'll admit to a little heresy here.

Last year, when I switched over to the EaO-26 Amsoil filter, I did a "flush" on the engine - after I drained out the old oil, I spun on a cheap Fram filter and filled the engine with el-cheapo 30 weight Supertech oil from Wally World, then ran it for 10 miles, and dumped it out - to flush out as much soot as possible - and then put in the normal Rotella 5W40 and the Amsoil filter.

One thing I noticed with the 30 weight oil - that engine was noticeably quieter and smoother running down the road, than with the 5W40.

Recently they opened an OReillys in town. I noticed besides the Rotella 15W40, they also carried Rotella 10W30 CJ-4 diesel rated - only place around that does. Since the CRD was due for an oil change anyway, I decided to do an experiment and try running the Rotella 10W30 as a winter oil - I'm having to block off the grille anyway with winter temps to keep the engine warm and get decent fuel mileage.

Hard to tell any difference on cold starts, but when running and warmed up, that engine is noticeably quieter.

I currently run the Rotella T 5-40. I will be switching to Schaeffer's Lubricants Supreme 9000 5-40 diesel engine oil.

Mobil 1 5w-40 currently, I'm going to switch to 30 on the next change and see if the mileage moves at all.

X2 but then I run the European Formula in the TDI also, so one oil covers them both.

European oil?

Humm...when you pour it in the engine, does it "glug" with an accent or something?

My wife went nuts and bought a bunch of Castrol Syntec 5W-50 at Meijer that meets the spec. I will look for the Rotella Synthetic when it gets used up.

It is all made from dead dinosaurs. Synthetic is manufactured from either natural gas in the group IV PAO oils (Amsoil, Mobil 1 European formula, Redline, Royal purple, etc) or petroleum oil in the case of the group III so-called synthetics like Mobil 1 0-40, Castrol synthetic, Quaker State synthetic, etc, which are nothing more than very highly refined mineral oil. Both kinds of synthetic oil are very effective and the performance differences lie mainly in the additive packages.
