The key to the mini diesel thing is those guys up in montreal buy older solid rigs and completely restore them better then new.So the EPA has to let you have it because its older then there laws mandate.Since they are mechanical diesels they are easy to work on.You could get a older mini diesel restored turn-key for 50-60% of the cost of new,and it wouldn't look like all the rest that have flooded the market from BMW...................H

25 years old in the US, 15 years old in canadia.

So if you want a 1993 skyline in canadia you can have it.

You know I have not done a lot of off-roading in my jeep. It is my daily driver and I am scared to death I am gonna tear something up. I drove over a curb last year to go from one parking lot to another avoiding getting out on the highway and smashed my trany pan all to hell. I got kinda cold feet after the bill came.

Sounds just like me.

I refuse to take a vehicle I paid over $20,000 for and beat the crap out of it on purpose.

Now....find me an old International Scout or Toyota Land Cruiser that's already beat to hell, and I'll gladly finish it off. :)

When I was in college, my roommate had an old S-10 Blazer. The thing was worth maybe $1000. We used to beat the crap out of that vehicle. Never broke anything but the water pump.

Those S-10s get good air coming off jumps. LOL!

Rock on!!

That Skoda is the type car we need here in America.

I bet that thing gets fuel mileage galore too.

Sadly, our diesel choices in cars are either ultra expensive, or well, just plain expensive.

Somebody make a nice little affordable turbo diesel commuter car and sell it for $14,000 to $16,000 depending on options and I bet you couldn't keep 'em in stock.

I just bought a VW Beetle TDi for commuting. It's used, has lots of miles left, and not that expensive. My wife still gets the CRD to haul kids.

So take that JeepCRD4Me, I bet the Beetle is more effeminate than that Mini.

Since I own both a CRD and a Cooper S, I have to reply. The CRD satisfies my 4x4ing and towing needs and the Cooper S more than satisfies my go fast, sportcar urges. The Mini is a great car, but totally different.

Convince her you need both! 8)

Sportscar urges? hmmmm.....

My 1.9TDI is 101 hp, the vrs is 130hp. I get about 47mpg driving 50/50 highway/country road during winter across a whole tank full. During the summer I can get it up to 55mpg on a whole tank full. It's not bad at all I think. It got plenty of power for such a little car, it's just 2300lbs so it goes from 0-60mph in 11.5 seconds (1 sec faster than the KJ :D)

Manual gearbox only, and will only tow about 2400lbs though.

I considered for a few days after the accident that FINALLY I could get a VW TDI for high-mpg commuting - I'd been looking at getting one since 2003, when I first became interested in diesels.

But a good used TDI has a lifespan of literally hours on the open market if it's priced anywhere under $10K around here. At the same time, you can still find a used 80's/early 90's MB diesel, that can give you a solid 30 to 35 mpg highway, from 4K to 8K quite easily.

I only have a 200 mile/week commute - 16 gallons was lasting me for 3 weeks of driving in the '87, if I used the CRD for weekend duty.

It would have taken me several years of commuting to make up the price difference in fuel costs. And with the present economy, money out of pocket is definitely a high-priority consideration.

Plus the fact I now have the tools, experience, and a car's worth of spare parts to keep the beast running on my own. No learning/expense curve with a different vehicle and engine.

Ha ha, I popped the right fender off the in the first week of ownership of the CRD( should have heard the shrieks coming from the wife). I was fortunate enough to live at the foot of the renowned Etna Mn trail so did not even have to plan for a trip through the mud or rocks. You should have seen the looks on the faces of the guys on the jeep trails in Tennessee when I would follow the crawlers through the mud holes in a brand new unmodified vehicle. I've been told That I had some big hairy ones more than once, to which I reply that Jeeps were not intended to be driven to the mall. The brush scratches on the sides, the white flex points on the bumpers and the dented rockers say much more than the stupid Trail Rated badge on the fender.

On a side note, no one should take a CRD off road with stock tires.

AMEN. Sometimes even the good tires just die. I was being real calm that day and was proud of myself for getting out with no damage...

But on the way home. flap flap flap flap flap flap flap the sound of a tire in trouble....
