At least coal is domestically sourced, and the energy conversion efficiency is much superior so less CO2 is put out. Where I live is good for wind power, and I pay extra to fund the development.

My power comes from wind power.

These topics of types of oils and fuels are always good for a bit of banter

OK, I'll admit to a little heresy here.

Last year, when I switched over to the EaO-26 Amsoil filter, I did a "flush" on the engine - after I drained out the old oil, I spun on a cheap Fram filter and filled the engine with el-cheapo 30 weight Supertech oil from Wally World, then ran it for 10 miles, and dumped it out - to flush out as much soot as possible - and then put in the normal Rotella 5W40 and the Amsoil filter.

One thing I noticed with the 30 weight oil - that engine was noticeably quieter and smoother running down the road, than with the 5W40.

Recently they opened an OReillys in town. I noticed besides the Rotella 15W40, they also carried Rotella 10W30 CJ-4 diesel rated - only place around that does. Since the CRD was due for an oil change anyway, I decided to do an experiment and try running the Rotella 10W30 as a winter oil - I'm having to block off the grille anyway with winter temps to keep the engine warm and get decent fuel mileage.

Hard to tell any difference on cold starts, but when running and warmed up, that engine is noticeably quieter.

I will tell you that at the cat dealer i work for, we have switched our bulk tanks over to 10w30 to help improve cold start issues. also all C9, C7, 3126, 3116, and 3114 are all factory filled with 10w30

Humm...when you pour it in the engine, does it "glug" with an accent or something?

Been running the Amsoil 5w40 DEO for quite a while, but recently switched over to Schaeffer's Series 9000 5w40. It shows real good results from those that have given it scrutiny at www.bobistheoilguy.com and I can get it at a lot lower cost than Amsoil. I just made a purchase and got it at around $19 a gallon for a case of 6 gallons. It is a group IV synthetic and group III synthetic blend oil and CJ-4 rated. I ordered a large amount since I am also using it in my semi truck. If one orders $350 or more, the shipping is free anywhere. Probably not cost effective to get a small amount, but going in with someone else and making a group order would make it very cost effective.

AMSOIL SYNTHETIC 15W40
PREMIUM HEAVY DUTY DIESEL & MARINE
12 TBN

Purchased by the gallon from my local Farm & Fleet store.

I don't think any of the dino based synthetics even come close to a 12 TBN. I like the stuff so much, I started using it in my TDI.

The 15-40 sounds a little heavy for winter in the cold north (Wisconsin). Does it flow better than a dino 15-40?

-20F (without wind chill factored in) here the other day, both vehicles have the original batteries and were sitting outside. The CRD had the block heater plugged in and cranked right up, idled just fine. The TDI does not have a block heater and turned over a little slower but started after a couple of tries.

I have never run straight dino oil in either of my diesels, other than to flush the engine prior to an oil change so I can't comment if it flows better than dino 15W40. The synthetic stuff seems to work just fine for me. I'm not sure if I would want to run it in much colder weather than -20F.

I think i decided to go with Schaeffers 5w40...kinda pricy but i think it will make an engine last longer.

I used a dino oil 15 -40 for about 50 miles and then got rid of it when the lifters started complaining loudly, bought some Mobil 1 synthetic 0-40 and she's never complained since.
