Well having 85k already on your KJ and if it has used "whatever" oil(whatever the place that changed it had) and want to switch to full synthetic just be warned that by doing so can(not always)make leaks appear.Full synthetic oil by nature has more detergents in them to keep things cleaner, this after time(a few normal interval oil changes) cleans all the built up sledge that have been preventing leaks. Also when switching to full synthetic at higher miles you will want to change the oil and filter at normal intervals for at least 3-4 oil changes since it will clean up the inside of you engine better and that sludge will end up in the oil filter.

I have run synthetic oil since 500 miles. If you plan on going over 5000miles on the oil get a oil analysis done before going over 5000miles,just to be sure.

Yes, GO AMSOIL AND AMSOIL FILTER. READ ABOVE, IT'S 100% TRUE! AN OIL ANALYSIS WILL TELL YOU WHAT CONDITION YOUR OIL IS IN AND WHAT CONDITION YOUR MOTOR IS IN.

I run Castrol Synthetic Blend 5W30 with the "crappy" Fram Filters and change it every 3K.

I like using Mobil 1 or Valvoline full synthetic and a Purolator PureOne or Wix filter. I get my Purolator at Advance auto.

sorry to hijack this thread but for you guys running fram oil filters, i wouldnt recommend it. i've been told by several people that The rubber anti-drainback valve that seals the metal backplate to the cardboard end cap easily leaks, causing dirty oil to drain back into the pan.

In my Jeep it is completely Amsoil now. I went through JJsKJ he is a great guy to deal with and had some great prices. I currently have 5w-30 oil, both F and R diffs are Amsoil, and also the tranny and transfer case protected by Amsoil. I couldn't be happier and I know that my jeep is well protected.

Sorry I'm late to this thread but I just saw it.
I use Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic oil and have used them from the 1000 mile mark.
I usually change my oil every 5000 miles and had been using Fram filters.
This last change I switched to a K & N filter because it has a nut welded to the end of the filter for ease of removal. I also upsized the filter from the recommended HP-2008 to an HP-3001. The larger filter has the same threads, is approx. 1.25 inches longer with a 0.75" larger diameter. This larger filter holds nearly a 1/2 quart more oil. I put 5.5 quarts into my 3.7 L gas engine. I plan on extending my oil changes to 7500 miles.
The larger filter fit perfectly without any modifications required to the plastic oil diverter. The add length should make removal easier too.
I've put 1200 miles on it since the change and no problems so far.
Hope this helps for future oil changes.
Mike

The best bet is going to be like stated before, get AMSOIL. however, if you wanted something a little bit cheaper, why not a high mileage synthetic? i run Valvoline Max Syn in mine and it works great! i used to work at Valvoline and alot of people seemed to use it and hardly anyone ever switched away from it. just a thought. i know alot of people cant get it at autozone or pepboys ( well at least the ones by me dont carry it ) so just run by any local Valvoline and you can purchase it from them ( think it's like 6.50 a quart ). and valvoline synthetic has been proven to be 4x's better than the regular mobile 1 synthetic when it comes to wear protection. just my 2 cents for what its worth ....

The only problem with going to the larger Ford filter is it does not have that "anti-drainback" valve that is required in our engines.

Are you saying that an HP-3001 = Wix 51515 = Motorcraft FL-1A does not have an anti-drainback valve but the smaller HP-1008 = Wix 51516 = M'Craft FL 400S does ?

I don't believe that.

Every "Ford" filter I've disassembled that has come off my Jeep or my Crown Victoria has an anti-drainback valve -- some nitrile, some silicone.

They have something similiar to a "anti-drainback valve" but it is not the same as the ones that are on the correct filters for the KJ,nor has the same purpose. The bigger filters what appears to be a anti-drianback valve is to small for that job and is mostly just a gasket to seperate the filter to make sure all the oil goes through the filter media instead of some bypassing the filter media.I'll try and remember to take my camera to work tomorrow and take some pics off different filters.

Not trying to hijack, but what good is an anti drainback valve anyway when we install our filters almost upside down. Where is the oil gonna go?

Here is what i did when i bought it at 45000

1) Oil change Mobil One and purolator filter

2) Transfer case Mopar ATF+4

3) Front and rear diff Mobil gear oil

4) Flushed the radiator

5) Dropped the pan and changed filters in the tranny

Power steering fluid coming up when it gets warmer!

Good for you. Penzoil is outstanding oil. The penzoil platinum is showing great used oil analysis reports on several engines over at www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums. That site will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about lubricants.
If you are going to do 3000 mile changes, the yellow bottle penz will do splendid. Amsoil in the pumpkins is a great plan as well. Good luck!!
