The weather here has been cold lately, and my Lib has not liked it. I am faced with some engine repairs (ie new valves, rockers, springs, etc.)
This is not a repair I can do, is there anything I should know, or look to upgrade while I have someone in there??

Any Info would be appreciated.

What kind of problems are you having with the KJ?

There are a lot of KJ's further north of yours that do just fine in the cold weather.

so whats wrong with the engine and what parts do you think need replacing besides what you have listed, also number of miles would be nice to know as well and year, doesn't sound like a cold weather problem and not a common problem either

You really should provide good info if you want proper assistance.

LIKE:

1. KJ Year
2. Miles on said KJ
3. Engine (4-cyl, 6 cyl, CRD)
4. Problems you have noticed with said KJ
5. What did the mechanic say is wrong with said KJ
6. What kind of off-roading has been done in it (i.e. deep water/mud crossing)
7. What maintenance has been done on it?

The Liberty is a 2003 4x4 with 92000 miles on 3.7L
the most recent issues have just come up in the last week.
It has not been driven since last tuesday when I noticed some
knocking, severe loss of power and overall rough running.
It has never been seriously off-roaded...no deep water, mud.
I have kept up with regular maintenance, and it has been trouble
free up to this point.
The mechanic I have been talking to is hoping we only have broken
springs, and not anything where the valves have made contact
with the pistons. :( Although with the knocking that it has been making,
I am not optimistic. The strange thing about the knocking is that the
knock sensors have not registered anything as far as a CEL.

I was hoping to get some input about some upgrades if there are any worth doing while
I'm going to have the top half of the engine apart.

Also, if a new engine is needed, where can I find out which years are compatible with mine??

Hopefully that sheds a little more light on the subject.
Thanks for all of the input.

Smart move on your part. (not that I'm saying you're not smart or anything) It's just that some people contine to drive a motor until very serious problems occur.

1) Milled heads - slight bump in compression ratio for better power
2) Non-Factory Cams - I think the cam upgrage would be wise since you are working on the heads at this point. You can search some old posts by KYLiberty for more detailed information on the camshaft upgrades.
3) Stronger valve springs if possible.

The basic parts are all interchangeable between the 2002-2007 model years. Some wiring might be different, but you can salvage that off of your existing engine.

In 2007 (?) the KJ's started using drive by wire so the TB is different on the later models but this isn't too big of an issue. Also after 2005 the recommended oil is different [5w-20]

Don't forget to look into the 4x2 performance section... now is a great time for lots of minor tweaks.

Hopefully that sheds a little more light on the subject.
Thanks for all of the input.[/quote]

Yep, sounds like a broken valve spring. I had one go on my 2002 somewhere between 100,000 to 110,000 miles. Ran fine until I came to a stop at a freeway offramp, where the oil prssure light came on and it immediately died. Restarted it and it ran really rough, but long enough to get me out of traffic. Knocked really bad and I was sure the engine was toast. But there was no collateral damage and I've put 70,000 miles on it since the repair with no other problems. Obviously while it's torn open you'll want to replace them all, assuming that's what it is.

So if I'm reading this right, any engine from a 2002 - 2006,7 would bolt right in without major modification?? What would be some possible hang ups??

With that year range, the engine availability is greatly improved. There are only a handful of 02-03 engines around, and for a decent one they are pretty pricey.

Thanks for the info...keeping my fingers crossed for non-engine replacement.
