I know you more knowledgable guys are going to speak up on this and explain why it's not an option, but I gotta throw it out there. I saw Extreme 4x4 build a rear diff case one time. I realize that a rear diff is much simpler, but boy they made it look real easy. It was made from steel plate. I just keep wondering how hard it would be to do this. If i ever trash mine, I might try it before I go for the SFA swap. Dunno... It just seems like there has to be a way to fab a steel one for a reasonable price.

As an alternative, I'll check with my dad and see what would be required to create a die cast one with a different design. He has 40 years of die casting experience (As a process engineer) and I might even be able to get access to the die casting equipment. The cost would be in the design (which I think I could get done for free) and having the die made (which would cost some money).

How many people do we think might buy one? 1000?

I'd buy a D30KJ steel version to replace the aluminum one. I have no interest in going SFA regardless of cost. Just me.

How many would buy a steel one, maybe 10 or 20 at most, for what it would cost most would say no way, they would wait till theirs break and install another stock for $300/$350. You would have to pay a few thousand at least even if you could get someone to make them. I mean look at what a bumper cost, good ones $750/$1000 so a new steel front diff would be WAY HARDER to make than that.
Making a cast one even with free design cost would not be cheap at all either

I would be interested in a steel replacement. A SFA would be better as far as off roading goes but it takes the shock away. That shock is coming from people that have never seen a Libby off road. It's a priceless experience to watch.

The main reason is the front D30A is not a 3rd member type of diff. You can do the above with a Ford 9" and most toy axles that are 3rd member style rear ends since the housing does not have to support the actual diff(the 3rd member does).

Well. Here in sweden the price for a used stock is about 2000 dollar. How much is the SFA kit? And where to buy it? And then add the shipping cost.
Can a SFA be installed whithout lifting the rear end? I mean, is the SFA making a lift of its own?
So far I´ll continue to drive only 2wd.

I made a few phonecalls, and found a diff for about 700 dollar, only 60 miles further away. That´s more whithin my budget.

Maybe my ensurance company will cover most of the cost. I can also get payd for the time I spend in the garage, and also for trasportation cost when I will buy the new diff.
So hopefully this will not be too expensive.

Not sure if you can have them shipped, our how much it would be. But in the states, you can get a new front diff case for $267.

..According to the illustration, that is the case for the actual differential inside the housing..

as hard as making a custom cradle.

if they fit the kj.

assuming they do fit. you need to buy a complete kk diff + cradle + labour to install all that. it must be well over $2k.

..Fortunately labor is a non-issue as I have the abilities to do whatever needs to be done. The actual idea was to see about modifying the KJ cradle - its just easier to do with both parts in front of me.
I have other projects currently going on though, so this is more just for gits & shiggles at the moment.

What is needed is to take measures from the KK differential to see how much different is compared to the KJ, long, height all kind of measures, I have a measure tape on my KJ so if I show up in the news for been rolled by a KK you know I do it for you

It was my understanding that the kk diff is quite different including the mounting from the kj
