You can't predict weather until it is happening, up in the Rockies. The Passes are moment to moment. The best thing is to have a CB with weather channels or stop at truck stops along the way and check.

Right now, it is snowing in the Rockies and in the Denver metro. Chain laws do come into affect quite often, mostly for semi's though. Take chains with you and be ready.

This time of the year I would take the southern route. Take 10 across then swing north. Distance is similar but the roads are less apt to give you trouble.

Route 66 to Chicago, then from there 80/90 to 76 to NJ.

Well Route 66 no longer exsists in many parts from LA to Chicago so I would suggest if you want to follow the "mother highway" as close to possibe, take the following route;

Leave Socal on the 15 to the 40 (however, I recommend 10 to Phoenix if you're in the OC or SD county) -
If you take the 10 to Phoenix... In Phoenix, take 17 north to Flagstaff -
Interstate 40 East thru Texas (panhandle) to Oklahoma City, OK -
OKC take Interstate 44 towards Tulsa, Oklahoma then into St. Louis, Missouri -
Interstate 55 north towards Chicago.
I've done this on a bike. and fwiw, I've also ridden many parts of old RT.66 in IL, MO, OK, TX, NM & AZ.

Outside Chicago (southside), take I-80 east into IN, OH, PA, towards whichever route takes you to your part of Jersey.

Whatever you decide, have a fun & safe trip!

thanx for all the input...this will be my 3rd time driving accross so i think im just gonna wing it. i dont really wanna go the same route i did before( very boring and plain) i guess thats why they call it the plains. but my mom is flying out here to drive back with me so i dont have to drive by myself again haha. im leaning more toward the northern rout and take a little trip to check out moab, never been there and just wanna see it. thanx again for all the input.
