Need some advice everyone. I'm currently in Indiana and am planning to return home to Utah either Friday or Saturday. On my way back from visiting family in Chicago, I noticed a clicking/grinding noise as I pulled through a fast food restaraunt. Checked it out today and noticed a lot of play and a clanking noise coming from the front drive shaft CV bolted to the transfer case. I've also noticed a loud bearing noise when in 4WD. I can't find a drive shaft in Lafayette, IN and can't get one ordered in here until Wednesday. I was planning on leaving Friday or no later than Saturday.

If I can't find one here, do you see any problem with pulling the drive shaft and driving home in 2WD? Could I just drive home (1500 miles) with the joint the way it is? Any other advice on where to find one?

Thanks!
Lee

No problems with pulling the front driveshaft and driving that way, just need a 8mm wrench/socket to remove, also may need a hammer to free the driveshaft from the mounting flanges and the older KJ's('02-'03's) will need to drop the exhaust pipe to fully remove(just the y-pipe right under the front driveshaft, just the 2 bolts).Don't put in 4wd if you have the select trac t-case.

Just as stated above, you can run 2wd without a front driveshaft. I did it for a week while waiting on a replacement. 8mm or 5/16th's socket will work, and I was able to wiggle mine out without taking the exhaust apart.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Still trying to find a replacement/repair because I sure would like 4WD going through Wyoming!

Anyone know of a drive shaft source in Indy? It's not that far away that I couldn't get one from there.

Your down near Badlands, maybe they got something there. Here's their number from their website (866) 762-2981, might be worth a shot.

Just to let everyone know how I resolved this problem. Through a local shop, they found out Indianapolis Rack and Axle could rebuild it. Ran down Friday and had it rebuilt for $250. It's worked great. Ran in to some freezing rain in western Iowa, so have put it to good use. Also looks like some slick spots in Wyoming. Definitely glad I got it rebuilt.

Glad to hear you got things worked out.

I'm confused? You were on your way back to Utah after visiting family in Chicago and ended up in Indiana - get lost?

I guess I need to get a new GPS nav unit! :D Actually the trip went from Utah to Lfayette, IN to Chicago to Lafayette, IN to Utah, although, if you take I80 straight across, it goes through Chicago.
