So I took my slip yoke in to a drive shaft shop today, east county Drive shaft in San Diego, Ca.

Now, the reason i did this is because i wanted to know if they could fab one, without the big booty flywheel, or perhaps make me a better drive shaft.

Also one of the channels for the internal clips on the slip yoke side of my drive shaft is cracked (i did this while replacing the u-joint) So i'm replacing the slip yoke regardless.

The tech said, "what you have there is more than just a slip yoke, that's a dual mass flywheel/harmonic dampener" Now, i knew it was a little strange, because it has those rubber gaskets visible from the outside plus those 4 holes in it, but i figured, a slip yoke is a slip yoke is a slip yoke, etc. He said that as soon as i said the word diesel, everything is changed. He said that without that flywheel, that it would tear itself apart; Due to the pulses of inerta created by a diesel.

HE said that i was up the creek and to go to mopar.

This makes me wonder, 1. Can this break. 2. Is this the cause of our drive line vibration.

Or perhaps even this; Those of us with tunes and suncoast etc that experience "shudder" could be simply creating more harmonic/plusation whatever the EFF than this unit can contain.

So i did a little research, seems like usually this type of device is installed in front of the bell housing.

Does the non crd have this thing on it?

ALSO, I've been driving around on my front end, and i experience SIGNIFICANTLY reduced low rpm high tq shudder; in the same situations that with the rear end in place, would rattle my teeth. Although it has more slop from r to d. (you can feel it even with the rear hooked up)

Seems like the gasser does include this type of device

seen here http://www.4wdandsportutility.com/tech/ ... index.html

And it also seems to function without it.

A lot of 4cyls of both fuel types require this type harmonic balancer\dampener on the driveshaft - 'course, ya don't see too many 4cyls, anymore, that are front engine\rear wheel drive - the Diesel really requires the additional smoothing, as does the big Cummins 6, even some V8 Diesels, depending on the wheel-base

If the rubber isolator(s) are shredded, melted, severe ozone-cracked, missing pieces, extruded, etc, then the dampener is not - if the cast-iron disc or hub is cracked, broken, chunks missing, distorted, crunched, etc, then the balancer is not

I jacked 'em up, started the engines, selected a suitable gear range, then wire-brushed the yokes, dampers, and driveshafts on my Dodge, the KJ, and my son's '06 Big Horn Ram Cummins 4x4, which were all rusty and nasty-looking - blow-down with shop-air and brush-off with shop-brush while rotating mass is spinning, quick cote of rustoleum gloss-black while still rotary, and we're good to go - subsequent cleaning\brushing\coating of remainder of drive-line, and we be lookin' good, over and under................................

Spent most of the day at the bone yards in southern san diego (near the border)

I saw a fair number of jeeps, not one liberty.

That said, those other jeeps rear end make a 8.25 look like some sort of god.
Even saw a few of the v8's and their driveshafts looked like they came off of a barbie doll jeep.

OF all of the jeeps i've looked at today, only the v8's had flywheel's.
I did find a couple of xfer cases that had slip yoke eliminators on em though.

So does that mean that we can't put a SYE system on the CRD because of the lack of all the waky flywheels in the back?

What is SYE?

Neb' mind, I'm knows - some fixed yoke drivelines have harmonic dampers - some drivelines have a secondary damper at the differential yoke
