Ok, we're home. This trail started out good but it quickly got rocky and steep. On a couple of switchbacks we had to make 2~3 point turns. Sorry, not much picture taking today... we were busy trying to get up the mountain and get everyone back down.

The last couple of hundred yards to the summit was the toughest. We climbed up to about 7,500 feet. This trip was a pre-run and WAS going to be the easy stock trail for F.I.T.S. To put it mildly... a stock Liberty would have a pretty tough time of it. Everyone agreed, this was a tough 3.0 trail. Rice Peak (Wells#68) will not be the stock trail for F.I.T.S.

Here are a few pics... sorry, none from the tough parts of the trail.

Taking a short break before tackling the mountain...

Image

Plenty of loose rocks on this uphill trail....

Image

Image

That's the trail in the distance and that's the easy part...

Image

It was a lot steeper and rockier than it looks in pictures...

Image

Near the top, just before the final climb to the summit...

Image

Coming back down from the summit...

Image

Thanks to everyone for coming out. A fun day and a fun trail....

Yes! All is well.

I had an Al's A-Arm split at the weld about fifty feet from the top. So here we all are at the top of Rice Peak, having multiple cell phone conversations trying to find an upper control arm in Arizona. AZKJ found one in Tempe. Roachman3700 had his sister bring it into Tucson that afternoon. Signcutter21 showed us how to pull the old one and replace it. Renstock shared a perfectly sized torque bar and did puppy watch duty. Oldhockeyvb went above and beyond by giving me a lift down the mountain and home. He also picked me up the next morning and brought me back up the mountain and helped replace the control arm. We got down and got it home without further incident.

Many thanks to everyone! I hope I can repay the favor, but ideally not at the expense of your Jeeps...

So add me to the list of Al's A-Arm failures. It was a rev 3, I think. The one just before they turned red.

Oh, hey Vern - I think I found the road you had taken before. It turns off the control road maybe a mile further up from the campground, here:

N32 31.398 W110 42.086

and it meets up with the Rice Peak road at the place where I said my map shows a road that goes quite a ways, here:

N32 32.229 W110 44.646

The USGS topo map shows it as a 4WD trail.

Yes Sir... it all came together miles from nowhere, atop 7,577 foot Rice Peak. That's what it's all about and it don't get any better!!!

Oh, and Russ... you're going to have a fine pair of Jeepin Pups!

FWIW, here is a link to some oem a arms on LOST:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=38999

If nothing else could be trail spares. These might be for diesels, not sure if they are the same. Scott in Yuma has some oem a arms for sale also from a 2006. I pm'd him and said he should think about keeping them for trail spares

Russ... your A-arm from Superstition Springs Jeep came to $230.27 PM sent with address and receipt info. I'll hold on to the actual receipt and give it to you the next time I see you.

Glad everything turned out okay... a tad expensive, but okay.

I am glad I traded mine in on the new ones. I hope they last longer. It is always a bit disconcerting to have something like that break.

That does look like a pretty good deal (I don't know if the diesels are interchangable), but I'm going to go ahead and get a set of the new rev of Al's. Then at least I'll have this stocker as a spare.

Other complicating factors to this particular adventure: Mary was out of town so I was drving alone, and I brought the puppies. It was their first trail ride - they got carsick several times on the way up, so the Jeep smelled like doggie vomit. They were absolutely fine on the way down in oldhockeyvb's Jeep, though.

Russ - I think those in the for sale section are off of a 2007 (gasser KJ only for 07)-- but-- diesel or gasser those uppers are exactly the same- only difference is the 410 lb coil spring for CRD and OME has that 500 lb spring that fits either gasser or diesel.
Installing those KK clevis' my self on my CRD and trying different combinations of stuff on my front end got me REAL used to what those parts look like and I cannot tell any difference.

FWIW

Russ - other wise- glad to see all went well and to see everyone helping- I know the feeling and help at the right time is sooo nice!

As a Joke( but maybe serious)- maybe the club needs to buy those UCA's and keep as spares since alot of those Al's arms are failing--

No doubt, i'll start bringing my used & abused arms along as spares.

OlHockey, dont know what All J will do, not really their product. They might have some old arms laying around to let him have back at a cheap price. The real issue I think is the design flaw of the weld and the "upgrade" program to replace a known failure. Still the arms are better than stock and I hope the new 4.5s are better suited for the conditions for which they were designed.

Heather is going to talk to JBA and see what she can get.

Signcutter21 wrote:

We figured that AllJ would have a little more clout with JBA than I would. If nothing else if I can get the "upgrade" deal from last year I'll do that, since it's just a little more than buying another stock arm for the other side.

Welll dang now I feel bad because I have one of Roberts' old stock a-arms sitting in my storage unit that I could have run down there and it wouldn't have cost you anything :(

Glad to hear Heather is working with you on getting a replacement.
