Actually my wife has this exact issue in her Liberty Sport, she's been bitching that I do all this work on my Jeep and still haven't fixed that on hers. I haven't taken a good look at it yet, but if I get to it before you I'll let you know.

You can try un-snapping the black cover off the PRNDL bezel and then resetting the indicator. Wait until it's warm out though because the plastic snaps could break. then you'll have to get out the silicone to put it back together.

back before I knew better I had my wifes 02 sport in to a dealer for an alignment and when we got it back they had fixed that thing without us asking, no charge. They probably felt they raped us enough on the alignment!

I removed the black bezel, then stuck a piece of cardboard under the little red indicator & super glued it back together, removed cardboard & good as new (make sure to move it to the right location first). My indicator had broken off completely from the little black plastic tab it should be on.

Got to looking at mine this morning while I was waiting for a doctor's appointment (I had read this thread before leaving home) and it looks like there are openings in each corner with a gray plastic tab that you would need to push in to release the cover. Didn't try it since I have no issues but it looked fairly straight-forward.

EDIT: here is your image with the tabs circled. Just push those in and the cover should come off, then snap it back on when you're done.
