Mine needs to be removable so it'll go into my garage.

Can't see putting it on the bumper or anywhere but the roof. No ground plane in those other spots.

Thinking 2' Firestik with a spring loaded base mount.

arrrgh i have 1.5" of clearance between my roof rails and garage. I almost had to "air down" to get in and out of the garage. Keep in mind mine is a '02 with rusty's 2.5 spacer lift with 255/70's, 3/8" clevis and no roof rack (yet...) Time to buy a bigger garage!!!

Why not try and get a door jam mount to put between the rear swing gate? Thats what I am going to install in the next few days...you can have a 5 ft antenna easily...

Matt,
At first I planned on adding a ground strap (grounding the entire rack to one of the mounting bolts inside the plastic covers) but never got around to it. Forward of me my range is fine, but for some reason people behind me have a hard time hearing me clearly if over 5 miles behind, but I hear them fine.

Ted, where on the rail did you mount the antenna? if it is toward the back then you may not have enough metal behind it to give you a good signal in that direction, and having most of the metal forward would explain why you get out better that way (although being heard 5 miles away is still fairly good). If the antenna is toward the back, you might try moving it forward when you re-install it (if possible) to see if it helps even out your front to back pattern. If not, I wouldn't really worry about it.

Well, so much for the idea that your antenna could be moved. With the SWR you posted for the system and the fact that the antenna is pretty well centered on the vehicle you probably won't be able to do much else. As for mounting the rig under the map lights, thats where I mounted the remote head for my HF rig (there's a pic somewhere in a thread of it). And since your mount is on the roof rack which is grounded to the body I don't think a ground strap will change much, but it couldn't hurt.

Yea I'm sure most of us would place the unit there but a lot of us, especially the guys with Limmys, have the EVIC unit there already.

I mounted mine sideways on the console so it faces up. I have found in previous vehicles that the mic cable gets in the way when driving. It is a pain offroading and is not legal (got pull over for it in my last truck) because it is a visual obstruction.

Mounted sideways on what console? The center console on the floor? Where was your CB mounted when you were pulled over?

It was probably where mine is, and the cop probably thought it hung down to low, or the cable blocked his mirror. Overall, it was a BS ticket if you ask me... probably one of those cops that went into LE just for the power/ego trip of writing tickets and picking on people. Or was a kid that was bullied in school and and wants to take it out on everyone else.

Mine was mounted to the roof of my truck in front of the mirror, the radio itself was above the mirror, the cable just hung down in front of the mirror. They said it blocked my path of vision and wrote me a ticket. The cop also tried to say my tabs were expired. The back year tag had fallen off. So I took the cop around to the front of my truck to show him my tags were good in the front and he accused me of stealing the tabs, the truck came back on his computer as being registered. It was one of those "you are a no good kid things and it 1:00 AM on a saturday and I want to bust you for DUI or DWI" things. We have all been there. It was still an $80 ticket.

I used a Wilson Mag mount for years in the center of the top never had it to come off and never had a problem with it Had one on my wifes Cherokee also.
I now have just one antenna and it is a screwdriver and has a72 in stinger over the coil.My roof rack was mounted to the bars and it was not verry good for a ground the ground strap did help a lot with the 4" antenna
Just my experience
