i don't have a crd, and don't remember which thread got me to thinking about this but have any of you pondered or actually swapped out the oem turbo for say.. a saab or mercedes turbo? ive seen and helped this done on other vehicles when the owners wanted shorter/quicker ramps and was curious if any of you had looked into it or done it

The problem is not the turbo, but how boost is controlled. Most turbos in the free world have a device called a “Waste Gate.” It is pressure activated and at the boost pressure setting, it opens a trap door to let the exhaust bypass the turbine.
The Jeep CRD turbo doesn’t use any of that. It has vanes that change the angle that the exhaust hits the turbine wheel. It is controlled by vacuum, not pressure.

Now if someone wanted to spend a lot of time, money, etc., designing a converter-box to do this, let us know. That could be done and I’m sure I could do it. Problem is that there isn’t much demand for such an item…..yet.

The VW TDI has alot of turbo options and it's a VNT. VNT15 VNT17 etc.

VNT is a much better way to go. Turbochargers are matched to the engine and there are ways to make them perform better by changing housings. Chip tuning and remapping are a lot easier and cost effective modifications. To restate a recommendation repeated many times, Suncoast before remapping or chip tuning. I plan to follow that one before I do any power mods.

Suncoast NEEDS to come first in the power mod list (SEGR is the uber-first mod) because if you don't have a solid torque converter... All that happy new power is being used to warm up transmission fluid. It won't ever see the tires.
