What brand of can is the one that you said spilled out? I had a Blitz red 5 gallon can that didn't leak at all. So where else can you buy the NATO? I think my buddy has a NATO that he bought from a Swiss military surplus catalog.

Just google Nato gas or fuel can and there should be a bunch of sites that sell them. I had two blitz cans (before I fabbed my roof rack sideways mounts for my NATOs) and they leaked like crazy. I couldn't get them tight enough it seemed, and then if I wrenched them tight it would be a massive pain to get them open again. These NATO cans are super simple and ten times easier to use. They aren't made to fit in the blitz can mounts that I use (they are larger by a few mm) so they fit really snug and they don't move even going 55 down washboard dirt trails or at full tilt on a hill. I can actually fit just over 6 gallons in my NATO cans too. They are 20 liter which is 5.28 gallons but I fill mine full. I just keep em in place with a rubber bungee strap while in their mounts.

Thanks for the information! Sounds like most everyone has had the best proven results with the NATO type of can. I sold my Blitz can about 3 years ago, so I might start looking for the NATO type to replace it.

That looks very similar to my Canadian military surplus can, with the exception of the cap which looks smaller in your pic, but it's a bit hard to tell. I'll try to take a pic if I remember.

I took that can on a long camping trip two summers ago, inside the jeep and it never leaked at all.

I always thought they were yellow to let people know that it was a diesel can and not to put gas in it so they didn't mix fuels by mistake.

What for? I'm not saying it isn't a DOT thing, but why? Like the color makes them safer or what?

Its so , in the unfortunate event of an accident, emergency crews can tell what kind of fuel there is at a distance, to accertain explosive risks..

That makes sense. So what do my green cans tell people? As far as I know they weren't painted from being red or yellow. They were diesel cans. :?

Green......... STEALTH...... No one wants his Jerry Can to give a way his position

Either or in a Green......But you would treat it as if it was ordinary Petrol ( or GAS as you lot say :P ) In Oz, with the Green Jerry Cans you can buy plastic zip Tags, Red or Yellow, that you simply attach to th ehandles at the top, lets everyone know whats in there.

Not these ones, the colours are wrong, but you get the idea.

Not quite sure WHAT you put in this colour tho....

I have Scepter fuel and water cans. These are made of plastic and are just great. Those are the same one that are being used by the military in Iraq and Afghanistan presently. All you have to do is to get a military gas can holder and fabricate a rack for it and you're all set. I bought some diesel cans in a military surplus for 10$ can. ea. I bought the water can for 50$ can. with shipping. These are made in Toronto but much easier to find in the US. You can also get some accessories that fits in the jerry can holder like a decontamination kit in case you want to wash your jeep after offroading. Seriously, those jerry cans are really undestroyable and come in a lot of colors. (http://www.sceptermilitary.com/fuel_containers/) There's a lot of quality in the different holders. In order of solidity, you have the jobbers red holders (pretty thin), in second place comes the US military holders which are the same as the red ones but of better quality and the steel is thicker, and in first place , the Canadian military holder from the Bombardier Iltis are great. They're 1/8" steel thick and really sturdy. I'm making a hitch rack with canadian holders for my liberty and I have a US military holder directly attached to my YJ.

I keep diesel in a red can. I figure if someone stole it and poured diesel into their spark-infested engine, justice would be self-serve.
