Pulled out my recovery kit on the weekend for an audit prior to Coffs. I needed a 'recovery hitch' for the back, thanks to Town and Country 4WD, and also picked up a proper 'equaliser strap'. Set the whole system up on the KJ to practice. Contemplating removing the splash guards before the trip up, but with all this bloody rain I'll be leaving them on (maybe till I get there).

I could not imagine being up at Coffs this week with all the rain. Should we be packing gumboots and serious rainwear?

Bet your happy you did the breather mods .. making me think more about it. Why would you want to remove the splash guards prior to Coffs?

Oh.. I forgot .... we need pics of your new recovery gear. Just to prove you did get some LOL

I have a Bushranger "Power-Air"Aeries II Compressor that fits neatly into a little black zip bag. It has fairly long leads that allow me to get around the vehicle to all the tyres. It's all I need. I've had it about one year. It outputs 29 litres of air per minute. Seems like it will run all day, at least I have never had a problem airing up all the tyres. The only thing I think that I would like to add to it is an extension cord so I can reach the trailer tyres, and now that I have thought of that I'll probably make one up. I'm happy with it, certainly don't need one of those beasts that can blow out candles in Darwin. Don't ask for Pics its out in the dark shed and its raining, instead here is the link to the Bushranger page on this compressor:

I have a Big W no name thingo that cost $80 three years ago now. It takes about 2 minutes to pump up the tyres(245x75x16) from 15psi to 36psi. The young fella has ARB one hard wired into the TJ and it cuts out after two tyres ( 33x12.5 ) . On several occasions I have pumped up my 4 tyres and had to pump up his last two.

I've got an $80 Dr Air compressor, had it for 3yr's and it still works. I kind of thought it would last 1yr but still pumps away... takes about 6min per tyre LOL but it works so I'm not changing it.

I have a Projector air compressor 75ltres per min. Its not quite a year old. Has been fine until our recent trip on the Googes Track SA when it failed after half way through the 2nd tyre. Luckily I was with my kids who had their own I could borrow.

Iam still waiting a replacement from the dealer.

I have a TJM compressor, 72 lit/min

Image

Can't remember what it cost (just under $200, I think), but it works fine. Never bothered to time how long it takes. Biggest drawback is that the hose connector onto the compressor gets v. hot after a couple of tyres, so I have to put it in the back of the Jeep and then pack it away later when it's cooled down (can't be bothered to dig out the leather gloves!). Also having the gauge on the compressor rather than at the tyre end of the hose is not the best.

My full recovery kit, carried on all trips.

9m x 8,000kg snatch strap
Equalising strap
3.75 tonne shackles
2 pairs MaxTracks (not carried on all trips)
Compressor
Tyre plugging kit
Shovel
Rear hitch adaptor
Toolbag (c/w 36mm socket!)
Assorted tape, wire, rope, etc.
Leather gloves
First aid kit
Fire extinguisher
HF & CB radios

Hopefully by Camp Coffs I may also have an Ox 9,500lb winch - it's definitely on my wish list. That will require the addition of a snatch block, tree trunk protector, and possibly another shackle or two - good job I've got the CRDSTU suspension and Polyairs to support all that weight!

I've also got a HiLift jack, but since the only place I can use it is in the towhitch socket I don't bother to take it. Fros, what news of Rocklizard side rails?

Good Kit Chris.... That winch sounds like a good idea, especially with the camper Trailer.

I was thinking one of those exhaust gases jack bags might be a good investment..

Also, you can get from ARB the adapter straps for a Hi-lift Jack that hook into your wheels and let you lift the car by the wheel. usefull for vehicle recovery to get you out of a hole, not for changing the tyre obviously.

Chris, when you get to my age and the kids are married and someone else's responsibility, and your house is paid for, you too will be able to spend a bit more on your hobby.

The first time I bought a new car, or even one that was less than 7 years old, I was 54. Count your blessings with what you have at your age.

That jack attachment works great until you want to loosen off those wheel nuts, which someone will do one day.

Agree with Pipeliner, my kids are all over 21 and self supporting (only my youngest living at home and she pays her own way). No mortgage, and my wife works full-time. I've earned the right to spend abit of my money on my toys, just wish I had had some of it when I was younger. "Youth is wasted on the young", until your second childhood.

You can also buy a set of attachments for the Hi-lift that turn it into a short haul winch. Perfect for just giving the vehicle a nudge out of a stuck position. Sometimes thats all you need to get going again. A few feet.

Not to be a downer guys and i'm sure you have all been told this before.......but please be careful with High-lift jacks my best mate was killed using one incorrectly....his own stupid fault mind you..... but all the same they are designed to be used on specific lifting points such as those demonstrated by cmohr above or some aftermarket bullbars.... so if your car doesn't have them the don't get one!!!
