I was using 4WD pretty frequently in the snow this past winter and started hearing some intermittent clicking or grinding noise coming from underneath, but only when I shift into 4WD. There is no noise whatsoever when in 2WD. About the same time, the part-time light started staying on when the tc lever was in 2WD. However, I am sure that the truck is actually in 2WD, so I think this is just one of those malfunctions in the indicator light that others have reported, and so is a coincidence.

My symptoms match with the front driveshaft noises others have had, except that both driveshaft boots are intact and there is no grease leakage anywhere underneath.

I still think it's the driveshaft, and am planning on ordering a new Tom Woods shaft soon, but I thought I'd throw it out to you all for feedback.

Any ideas?

Check for play in the joint before assuming its bad.

Does turning change anything at all? Make it click more?

I have an almost new front drive shaft and I still get the intermittent clinking while in 4wd when the front wheels are turned or in a bind. The stock front drive shaft is just crap. Use it till the sound gets constant in 4wd then you'll know it's time to change it. My first one started making sounds and I still beat the hell out of it for a couple of weeks till it was pretty much destroyed. Then I just ran without one for a week until the new one came in.

I turned the shaft by hand and yanked on each end pretty good. There's no play I can detect and I can't hear any clicking when turned by hand. However, the clicking/grinding noise is constant and obvious when in 4WD and disappears when in 2WD.
