Burning Smell (Brakes?)

I just had my rear brakes (pads and rotors) replaced at the dealer (44,000 miles). I noticed a distinct burning smell coming from the rear wheels.

Is this the new brakes "breaking" in, or is there a problem. Seems weird to me.

There have been problems with calipers sticking - doublecheck their work

Hope you paid with a credit card and can pull back payment if they don't at least give you another set of new pads when also fixing the sticking caliper problem.

Just got back from the dealer.

They replaced the left rear caliper. $201.48 bill. Parts were $84.56, labor was $127.50. They took 10% off the parts and 20% off the labor.

My normal Jeep dealer went out of business, so this was the first time I tried this "new" dealer. Guess I'll have to find another dealer.

I have an EVIC with the tire pressure showing for the 4 on the road wheels. Since burning out my rear brakes from stuck calipers I often will keep the tire pressure reading up on display since the dragging brake will impact the tire pressure reading before I can smell them.

I think it needs to be a 2006 or newer. I believe non EVIC and older than 2006 just gave you an alert if you had a low tire. 2006 displays pressure on each wheel, but oly alerts on the spare.

Our '05 Ltd EVIC reads tire pressure in almost "real time" on all four wheels simultaneously and changes in one pound increments.

As such, it definitely could be useful in terms of picking up a possible sticking caliper.

Wierd,my EVIC system dosent display the tire pressures.It does everything but that.It goes straight from miles to service to blank screen.

There are two types of TPMS EVIC packages......Regular and Premium. Only the premium version displays a readout of tire pressures for each wheel on the EVIC. Regular does not display and uses the standard idiot light and chime on the dash.

The only options my 06 does not have is the Navigation system and the premium EVIC.

Our '05 Ltd has the Nav system. Maybe that comes along with the "premium" EVIC. In any case, it can be pretty useful, except when one of the tire sensors go "haywire"(often "self-repairing", though). (At least it narrows it down to one wheel, though, so you only have to check one with a gauge. I guess you have to check all the tires with the "standard" system.)

Only got the low tire warning once. Idiot light turned on, EVIC displayed IIRC something to the effect of: "spare tire low". I assume I must have the regular EVIC... (mine does not display individual tire pressures) The spare was indeed low. Checked the running tires and they were in spec. Anyone know if its possible to upgared to the Premium EVIC?

Maybe this should be reported to NTSB, too many of us have had bad rear calipers, my left rear locked up intermintantly then finally died. I have the 100k bumper to bumper so I saved a little. Brake fluid look toasted after it failed and had to pay to have it flushed even though the bad part caused it to overheat..

I posted the below, previously. I think we may have benefited from a "silent recall".

"On our '05, WITHOUT ESC, we probably could have gotten 40K (mostly highway) out of the rear pads, but for a sticking caliper. I brought it to the dealer just before the 3/36 expired to see if they would do anything about the uneven pad wear and was flabbergasted when they installed (on both sides) new calipers (different design) pads, rotors and gave me a loaner car for the day, all for no charge!

Unfortunately, they went out of business shortly thereafter."

At 46K miles now, my pads look like they might last to 100K. I had the rear pads replaced under warranty because of the sqeal thing, but that was at 8K miles. Our CRD is 98% highway miles.

My CRD is mostly highway driven also and my front factory pad have about 109K on them right now

At 68k my front pads have never been changed but the rear wore at at 65k. The dragging left rear caliper didn't cause this as the right rear was down also. I never owned any other vehicles that the front brakes out lasted the rear.
