It's getting to be that time when a combination of miles and trails are becoming evident in the wear of my Libby. On to the front drive shaft...

Why do we have double-flanged CV shafts running from the transfer case to the front diff??? The line seems straight enough for a typical double u-joint shaft, so what's the deal?

That being said, has anyone done the conversion to "all u-joints" with someone like Tom Wood?

Inquiring minds wanna know...

Grant

Hey Grant!!!

That was the next question I was going to ask Tom Woods after we gets done with the SYE for the 242. I am planning to ask him to take a look at the front drive shaft. I will be putting the 4.10's in the Liberty soon, and with that I am going to see if the standard yoke from a dana 30 will fit. This will allow for a standard "u-joint".

Excellent! Once again, you are ahead of the game. I'm removing mine due to safety concerns, and will thusly be in 2WD and standing by...btw, this will probably keep me out of Moab this year. I'd rather work toward a D30 type from Tom than have to go with another factory double-CV shaft.

Thanks again, tip of the spear!
Grant

Hey Grant welcome back to the living! :P

Can't ride the harley, so now your back on the board! You have a 2wd KJ now, wht's this world coming to? :D

I talked with Tom Wood, and one of the things he ask me, what about a front drive shaft? So he said he can put a new yoke on the transfer case, and its up to me to see if a standard dana 30 universal joint yoke fits the KJ front diff. I will be doing that over the week-end. We have been talking and e-mailing each other on a new front shaft. The Dakota's and the durango's use the same set up. So there may be a market. You should drop a line to show some interest in a new front shaft.

I'll give him a call since he admittedly doesn't get to the emails very often. Outstanding crosstalk, thanks! If you already have something of a D30 to check the fitting onto the front TC axle (terminology?), then great. If no, that should be a terribly common item to break away from a junker somewhere. Let me know if I can help with this, as I'm vacationing near a yard with old XJs and other rigs.

The harley is great, though I am preparing to completely rebuild the motor for cleaning, new gaskets etc. All this after I install the new hub/bearing units on the Libby this weekend. In between which I will resort to our afore-mentioned front drive shaft project. Busy winter? Nah!!!!

Thanks again, let me know how I can help now that I'm back on radar...

Grant
