Hi
I have a problem with my cousin's 03 Renegade

The rear axle makes a noise when it turns, it does not matter if it is left or rigth, forward or in reverse, the noise comes from the inner part of the wheel, not the diff.
Only at the turns when the wheels are spinning at different speed

We lifted the KJ from the rear and put it in Drive, no noise was detected, but when we "locked" one wheel the opposite starts making the noise and when we locked that wheel and free the other it happened the same with the another wheel, so the noise starts only when there is a speed difference between wheels.

Does anyone knows what could cause this??

Thanks in advance for your help and greetings from Mexico to all

Would need to know more, but my guess is that it has the Trac-Loc rear diff and the worn out clutches/steel discs are chattering. If it's an open diff, then the spider gears are probably toast.

1./ It does not have a locker...

2./ Yes, it have the trac-loc diff, all Renegade here in Mex. have trac-loc (03-04)

But, it is not the problem, some months ago I had a problem related the trac loc in my KJ before I installed the powertrax (that's why I installed that), that problem was the same as you comment 2mopar_diesels, and the noise was very different and it came from the diff.

In this case the noise comes from the wheel, not the diff (center of the axle)

Thanks for your comments

I sort of had that problem.
Did you change the fluid recently?
Forget to put 4oz of friction modifier in?
Not doing that will burn out the clutch pack
in no time..
My rear end was rebuilt under warranty.

Check to make sure one of the axle shafts isn't broke, or the splines twisted. Also make sure all your bolts are tight.

Sorry, I didn't reply before

The friction modifier was the solution, no more problems so far

Thanks to all for your comments

Hello again

Now I have a noise in the rear diff. on my KJ.

The sound comes from the area between U Joint and the rear diff. at the moment it is spinning, but only when I accelerate (continuously noise) and when I'm breaking, when coasting the noise disappears.

I'm not sure if maybe could be the diff. yoke or something else inside the diff., FYI, I have the Powertrax No Slip on my rear diff.

The noise starts last Saturday when I was driving highway, no special or rare driving conditions, it suddenly starts, this sounds like a buzzing, for sure is something that is moving inside the diff.....

Does anyone have an idea what could make this noise??

check the rear ball joint mount that connects to the axel. I just had to have mine replaced after the bolt hole went out of round. My jeep vibrated and buzzed like crazy. only at certain speeds...then it would smooth out. The hole had gotten elongated and the bolt would not hold it tight...even a larger bolt would not remedy so I had to replace the mount which can only be had from scrap yards. Its not a part that is manufactured either by chrysler or aftermarket. could be the cause. when up on the lift, the whole rear axel could be shook by hand. it was pretty amazing. The part is cheap from a take off and the install is pretty simple.

Thanks, I will also check it, but the noise comes from inside the diff. case.

Next Saturday I will go with a friend who own a mechanical service place, these days I don't have time to investigate by myself due high workload (preparing for an TS audit).

Thanks for the advice I will tell my friend to check that.

Thanks for your comments
