Gasoline and Diesel in the U.S. is still considered “cheap” fuel as compared to the rest of the world.

Personally, I hope Mahindra is successful--for two reasons. First, the US desperately needs a fuel-efficient pickup--it doesn't have one now, and really hasn't since the small-displacement diesel Toyotas, Mistsubishis, and Isuzus (and their American-badged versions) went away in the 1980's.
They may be a hit with the tree huggers but poeple who really use pickups(farmers) will have no use for the thing due to the low payload and towing capacity, which when towing or loaded with a heavy payload would never see half the advertized MPG #'s.No I'm not agaist it by any means but if you need a pickup that little one is not going to cut it,for light duty apps it would be good and for poeple that have no use for a pickup but want to look cool it will be perfect.Your not going to get good MPG's when towing 20,000lbs no matter what, not even with 10,000lbs or 5000lbs.Sure a new Dodge or Ford can get 20+ MPG's when empty but put a full load behind it and yes the MPG's will nose dive.

Most people don't tow big loads. I might tow 2000lbs max. I think a little diesel truck would be great for trips to Home Depot, and towing my motorcycles.

This you-tube gives the history of Mahindra building CJ3x jeeps under license from Willys. It gives a history of the continual updates of them. Very interesting

Mahindra says they are still set for a Spring 2009 launch.

“Today, the company is all set to write a new chapter in the history of its international operations as it gears up to enter the challenging US market in 2009.”

I did research on this company before buying my CRD..........Origally built willys spec jeeps in the 40s&50s,took knowledge from that and is one of the biggest producers outside of USA.To this day they still make a Willys look-alike for 2nd and 3rd world countries. They are nice (seen one first hand in canada),but with the build quality of Suzukis.Great for what they are,I just like features and options to much, hence the CRD.On a side note alot of these were used (willys lookalike) on A-team,Platoon,MASH,and Full metal jacket. They are the ones with no emblems or insignas that get blown up.....................H

the sparse info I've seen was indicating a 4th qtr. 2009 launch.

but wouldn't mind a cheap bare bones pik up...

I like it!

I looked at their website, and no where does it mention what it's tow rating is or how much it's going to cost.

If they can deliver that sucker for less than $20,000, they will sell a crap load of them.

I glad SOMEONE has finally figured out that there is a market for small diesels in the US.

Sadly, it is a brand most people have never heard of. If GM put a small diesel in the Colorado or Ford put one in the Ranger, wow...they'd sell all they could make. Fools!

"Mahindra's plan to launch its midsize pickups in the United States has taken another interesting turn, as the Indian automaker now plans to assemble the first U.S.-bound units at home and not in Ohio as originally planned. The change means that Mahindra will now be forced to pay the 25% federal "chicken tax" that was first created in the early '60s in retaliation against European tariffs on U.S.-bred chicken."

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/14/firs ... dia-not-o/

"Mahindra, won't approve a sales start until after 25 test trucks have racked up 3.2 million miles on U.S. roads."

That's 128K per truck, so it might take awhile.

Ford has been doing that for years, All the Rangers I saw in Jordan were diesels.

Yeah, Ford puts a wicked little 2.8L International diesel in the Ranger and F-150 made in Brazil. In fact I think it's this one http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/hs2800TDI/
Man wouldn't I love to have a 100% mechanically injected Waste-gated modern engine in a new vehicle.

Someday I'm going to be rich and I will just buy a crate engine and BUILD one of the "export" small diesels myself. Then once I prove conclusively that it WILL offer MUCH better mileage than it's gas counterpart... I will drive it right to Congress and PROVE to them that not only is it POSSIBLE to build an economical vehicle, but that it can be done in a frame that people WANT to buy.

*sigh* But after the couple of months I've been having... I think that goal is even further away.

Just think how our CRD's may have turned out had DC had such testing procedures
