Morning all, yesterday I did an overdue oil change on my KJ with 95k on the ODO. The interval was prob 6-7k miles on Mobile 1 10w-30 synth. I noticed that peanut butter sludge in the filler tube but cleaned it out, it didnt go to deep seemingly. Anyways, I switched to Valvoline 5w-30 synth and a Fram Toughguard filter because Wally World was out of the Mobile one. Yea i know the Fram is junk, but i was in a rush.
All seemed fine after the change until the night when i took a short trip to Lowes. When I got back and pulled in the driveway i noticed the engine was knocking/clattering/ticking way more than normal. Its odd because it only does it once its warm. I reconfirmed the noise this AM by starting it in the driveway and letting it idle. After 5 minutes or so the noise started up again. Kinda sounds like its coming from the passenger side of the engine.

So my questions are:
1. Do you think the switch in oil manufacturer or weight could have started this noise?
2. Is the peanut better thing terrible? I have seen it a few times before and read that it was just condensation.
3. Would a Seafoam treatment help at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Oh yea, yes, I checked the oil level this AM. Its about 1mm above the full mark.

Drain a qt from your oil pan, and add a qt of ATF.

Drive it for a while, then change the oil/filter again.

See if knock reoccurs.

If that does not work, time for a new engine. Sell you an '02 3.7 for $1500:)

EH.... i dont know how comfortable i feel putting ATF in there. Does the ATF clean things out better than seafoam or upper engine cleaners?

It sounds like its a lifter problem the more i listen today. Maybe knock wasnt the right word. Its ticking just like when its real cold in the AM and you first start it but all the time now.

Also, I changed the oil and filter again this morning to back to Mobile 1 5w-30 and a mobile one filter just to be on the safe side. Same noise after it warms up. You cant really hear it much when the rpms rise prob because whatever it is is moving faster.

Im bringing it tomorrow AM to the mechanic right down the street. Closest Jeep stealership is 10 miles away. I don't know how comfortable I feel going that far, plus they will obviously cost lots of $$$.

ATF's primary job is to clean.

If you don't want to put ATF in there, don't.

Your engine is probably FUBAR anyway, so it's not like it will hurt anything to put it in there :?

If it's just a TICK though, there's probably nothing to worry about. Seriously, drain a quart, put a quart of ATF in there.

used to use atf to clean up seals and carbon deposits by trickling it down the carb while the vehicle was running, creates a nice james bond smoke screen but would make a world of difference

I threw some Seafoam in the crankcase and vac lines this am with no difference. I think that peanut butter sludge is clogging something, maybe the oil pump or screen?

Its just so odd that this happens right after an oil change. Its gotta be related to sludge.... javascript:emoticon('')

if you got peanutbutter in your pump screen you got more than condensation

Your first mistake is putting peanut butter into your engine instead of using it to mount your maglite!

Seriously, though. how far over are you on your oil change?

Seafoam ain't gonna do it. drain a quart, add ATF, drive it for a while, then change oil/filter again after a hundred or so miles.

I think I was at 6-7k total since last change, with Mobile 1, so it shouldnt really be that bad.

Take it to a pro and have the real problem diagnosed Before it becomes a bigger, more costly problem. Throwing different chemical concoctions at it isn't going to fix it if it is a valve spring going bad or any similar problem.

Or turn up the radio and wing it.

Just dropped it off at the mechanic. What do you think about the tensioner mechanism clicking? The noise is only coming from that side of the engine and when i look at the tensioner its not parallel with the mount. Meaning there is a bigger gap on the passenger side than the drivers between the actual moving part and the fixed part.
The mechanic seems to think it may be that more than engine noise as well....

Hopefully have an answer in a few hours...

Josh

Didn't hear a ticking from my bad tensioner but it squeeled like a stuck pig. Hopefully that is all it is though as those are cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Well that wasnt much help, actually it was a waste of time!
The mechanic didnt want to crack into it deeply but they seem to think its the timing chain tensioner after they looked at it and listened with their scope.

Is that a terrible thing?

Tough to tell cause of the engine noise but yes i think it does. The noise doesnt really get louder but faster I think. Like i said, tough to tell with the engine noise.

thats what I wanted to know. Now can you locate the sound? does it seem to be coming from the front of the engine or from one of the sides

Not really, i just scoped it again using an old antenna and it sounds like its coming from right under the a/c compressor. I think i can feel the noise with with my hand but could be the brain playing tricks.
