I know all diesels smoke, but I was following my girl friend last night ans noticed some visable light colored smoke under light acceleration. Is that normal?

Pull out and check the air filter - headlites illuminate haze you can barely see in daylite - dirtier the air filter, the more the haze

Yes it is. It will smoke initially on startup, then when you give it fuel under a load. Just idling along shouldn't produce any visible smoke.
