So I'm cruising down the highway and my 05 CRD lost its 'torque' when I pressed on the throttle. In fact it was so bad I looked at my wife and said I think the turbo just went out, a few more pounces later I confirmed something was majorly wrong as a huge plume of white smoke came pouring out of the back of the Jeep. It honestly looked like I was at the Brickyard 400 in my stock car with a blown engine….but anyway I digress. I got her off the road and had it towed to my house. I checked the levels of all the fluids and the only noticeable problem was the engine oil. After touching base with a friend who used to be a mechanic he indicated that obliviously the oil dumped into the exhaust causing the smoke screen.

So I drained a little oil out of the pan to make sure it had some oil in it and then I plugged her back up. I then poured 4 quarts of oil in and afterwards I still couldn’t get a reading on the dip stick. I fired her up for about 1 min to see what would happen and nothing appeared to be wrong. Went in for lunch and when I came back out I had at least 2 quarts of oil on the ground which had poured out of the front of the muffler. At which point I called Chrysler and had them tow the CRD to the nearest stealership.
The stealership then confirmed that it was a blown turbo (not just hoses as most might suspect). They indicated that they would replace the $1100 turbo (plus they would cover labor), but they then told me I had to replace my hoses for $341 (P/L included) and I also needed to have a intercooler flush for $310. I indicated that if the turbo hadn’t have blown then I wouldn’t need any of this done. We all know how crappy the original hoses, but I still played devil’s advocate with the stealership. I then said I would call Chrysler and ask them to pay for these residual parts and maintenance. My case is still open with Chrysler, so I’ll let you know how it turns out.
However with that said, what else should I ask them to replace/fix/check after the mess that this caused. My mechanic buddy mentioned the following: catalytic converter, O2 Sensor. But I’m not sure of the components that could/would have been affected by this type of catastrophic failure. Any thoughts for me?
