SMERF, if you haven't been to Arkaroola before, you'll be amazed at some of the tracks, they are awsome! Steep goat tracks that point at the sky or have you falling on the steering wheel. We had a quick stop in there a few years ago, did the "Echo Camp back track" with my young son, got to the first climb, the young bloke said "No way Dad!" I put her in low range and said " 'Way Dude!" and off we went. Had a ball, some challenging boulders to climb and jump ups as well, but the jeep handled it all ( lost one of the stupid mudflaps that the jeep came with), so yeah, have fun down there!. It was a highlight of our trip. Do the Skytrack or whatever its called, see if you can tagalong. Great scenery as well (to us Flatlanders anyway!)

Picture of my Son on top of one of the ranges. Note the track drop off behind him. at the time, Jeep was stock from the showroom, first time "off road" and i was stoked! Lucky they have great approach and departure, because Tojo and Niisan will get hung out to dry on them tracks.

Just had a look at the national school holidays calendar.

http://www.dest.gov.au/portfolio_department/calendar_dates/school_term_dates_2009.htm

Its all over the place & not during the intended trip dates, this will make it difficult to sell to the missus.

Dates were deliberately picked to avoid school holidays, as some can't get leave then as they don't have school age kids.

If Nobster is out, what does that do to the dates? Didn't we move it to the 15th of August start to suit Nobster? Does that mean that the start goes back to 22nd of August?

OK, let's summarise the plans to date.

We will meet up in Birdsville on the afternoon/evening of the 24th August. The Brisbane/Gold Coast starters will join up along the way somewhere (also probably GI Frog who will come up from Sydney), and NT Jeep will join us in Birdsville. Nobster is planning to start the week before and take the long route to Birdsville via the Flinders and Innamincka.

We will then cross the Simpson and travel up to Yulara (Uluru) to arrive there on Sunday 30th August, where we hope to meet Palla and family from WA. Spend a few days exploring the area, then those who have to be back by the 7th Sept (Cmohr and Nobster) will split off to return to Brisbane (probably via Alice and the Plenty Hwy) whist the rest of us will enjoy another week doing whatever (nothing planned yet)

Hope this is acceptable to all.

Hi, i tried to get the dates moved forward to the 15/8 but NTJEEP could'nt change his dates so they stayed the same, leave Brisbane 22/8 meet in Birdville on the 24/8.I have done some mileage sums and don't think it's worth my time to go to Ayres Rock for just a couple of days and then travell for 4 days straight to get home to start work on the 7/9.So i'm still taking the 3 weeks off starting 15/8 and heading to Birdsville and then down to Arkaroola and the Flinders Ranges. As i would love to go with you guys, three days just is'nt enough time to see that part of Australia. So unless we can come to some other arrangement i won't be going. :( So if there is anybody else that these dates don't suit(22/8-12/9) and can go a week earlier (15/8-6/9) and wants to tag along with me, let me know.

Sorry to hear that Nobby - but you will love the Flinders. Lots of good tracks at Arkaroola and through the whole area. The Blinman Hotel is great for an evening meal and they do (did) fantastic lunch packs.

3 days may not be enough to see EVERYTHING in the area, but it should be enough to get a good taste and decide whether to come back to see the rest! After all, it won't be going anywhere and hopefully we all have a few more years travelling left in us.

OK. I agree with Nobster about the timing, and not wanting to rush to just have three days in a place where I would like to have a week - at least. I was OK to start on the 15th (but not thrilled about the available time as I have to be back in Sydney by the 4th of September - as I previously indicated), so even then I felt rushed. If we are to meet at Birdsville on the 24th of August, I don't see how I can do the trip justice and get back by the 4th. I like Nobsters proposal re a less ambitious route south from Birdsville (it is almost identical to the Sydney Jeep Club route (but in reverse - they are coming up from the south). So I'm leaning back to the SJC Trip leaving at the beginning of the NSW July school holidays: via Broken Hill, Yunta, Flinders, Wilpena Pound, maybe south Lake Eyre, up the Birdsville track, options for leg out to Big Red and maybe the Corner, back to Innamincka, Cameron Corner, Tibooburra, White Cliffs, etc. where they are not rushing, have lay days for exploring and tourist stuff, etc.. :(

I'm sorry that Glend and Nobster won't be joining us, but it was always going to be difficult to pick dates that suited everyone. Maybe you two could join together and go across a week earlier - then you can give valuable advice to the rest of us. If you did that and then spent a week around Uluru we could still all meet up for a day when the later starters reach the rock.

Whatever happens, I hope you have a great time.

Palla, sorry you can't make it. We'll have to meet up the next time I get across to Perth.
