Hey, just a quick little occurence from todays wheeling session. Although unimportant, near my place is a Coca-Cola Factory / Warehouse.....behind it is unclaimed "Crown Land"....so naturally the 4 wheeling community hangs out there and wheels. There are a few challenging trails and a little run-about area with big bumps ditches and rocks and some small hills. Its a fun spot.

Anyway while we were wheeling around there a newer Toyota pick-up and an early 2000 model TJ showed up and played around in the run about area. We were just coming back from a trail (sorry no pics, it was dark...next time though) and started messing around in the run about area for a bit then stopped to relax and watch the others tool around. The Toyota and the TJ then decided to hit one of these small hills (fairly steep and slick with mud and a bit of snow) the Toyota? forget it, couldn't even get its back wheels onto the hill without loosing all traction....no traction control, no lockers he told me...then the TJ, got onto the hill but then started spinning and sliding down backwards...he tried again a couple of times then made it up and over...yellow TJ now brown TJ....so we decided to throw the Renny at it, up and over the first time, no spinning no sliding, just up and over like it was flat land....so to show off and just be "that guy"...I took my KJ around (proudly wearing its LOST KJ decals of course) and went up and over another two times all the while keeping direct eye contact with the other two drivers...the third time over I actually stopped on the hill, let it roll back a bit and then go up and over again just to display the KJ climbing prowess!!

The looks on these guys faces were priceless when we went over the first time. They both made comments about how they thought for sure it wouldn't make it...being a Liberty and all. I did the KJ proud today, and added some showboating just to make it sting a little more!

Yeah man, the ESP was kicking on and off while I was climbing that hill, it feels a little weird in the accelerator because it feels like a sudden loss of pwer but your still moving forward...it did its job quite well, it was a proud KJ moment that day!

So the ESP stays on even in 4-Lo?? I dunno about that, seems like a bad idea, I'd prefer to just have everything locked

I've heard that if you get into soft dirt or sand, the ESP will literally stop the Jeep in it's tracks. Sounds like a sucky idea for an off-road vehicle to me.

Careful not to be TOO much of a showoff. You said yourself it was at night, so those other drivers are the ones who will be pulling you out if you do get in over your head :-P

But awesome that the KJ made it! KJ is really coming out on its own as a respected mall-crawler by day trail-rig on the nights/weekends.

Thats the word...but so far its just pulled me out of those situations.....but you do have the option of shutting it off.....in fact when you do put it in 4LO the ESP does turn off....the light comes up on the dash....however it kicks on in really bad situations...its been good....plus I have the DC rear locker, and it works great. DOn't let the ESP stories make you believe its bad...coming form direct experience its been awesome.....got me out areas I thought for sure I'd be finished. I spend alot of time in the country side and in big provincial parks and its come through in mud, sand, and slippery rocks in rivers.

Cool story... I was wondering how the locker did with the ESP... Sounds like it enhanced it and not fight it..

"plus I have the DC rear locker, and it works great"

Hey i'm recently new to the forum here...
Question for those of you that own a 2006 KJ. Is the DC rear locker an additional option you have to order or does it come standard on all 06 models. When i got my 06 Limited i looked for the trac-loc limited slip or a locker...and my dealer told me 06 models didn't have any...that the ESP and All Speed Traction Control incorporated these features.
Very confusing....can someone explain this?

Thanks a lot

Yeah the ESP and locker combo.....I know its hard to kinda get your head around because one does almost the same thing as the other....in my opinion they have complimented each other incredibly. The two items both seem to know when its role is....I'm not sure if they have worked at the same time because I've never got stuck in a rut or on a hill yet and in snowy icy conditions I have yet to slide or spin my wheels....I mean this thing is glued to the ground in all aspects......as far "trac-loc" and ESP are concerned.....ESP is a anti-slip/spin control program in the KJ computer...diverting power from a weakening wheel to a stronger wheel back and forth until its clear of a problem....trac-loc is a traction anti slip model that ESP has replaced.....a locking differential....that you can still obviously get on 2006 ( I have it on my renny from DC ) is a completely different item in the way that it literally locks up the entire axel and diff case so there is NO slipping at all and no tranfering power, it is a mechanical PART not a computer program incorporated into moving machinery (Electronic Stability Program ESP) I know its confusing how they work together....I'm having a little difficulty sitting here getting my head around the whole thing.....but they do work well together....and it would seem separately but at this point I'm not sure....however, once I have my new lift and tires on this Renny....I believe it will be unstoppable.

I may be wrong, but I haven't seen anything about a locker in the 06's. All the paperwork I have says that the Trac-Loc is gone b/c of the ESP and no locker will be available.
