Uconnect - can't download songs via my Sandisk U3 Cruzer

I have a couple thumb drives/flash drives. One is an 8 GB sandisk...and the darn Uconnect won't recognize it. On the other hand, it will recognize my significantly smaller (256mb) drives. What gives?

Well this is easy..

The system will not see anything larger then 2GB I bet. It is a limted by the OS in the system..
I am not 100% sure of this, but I am fairly good with this stuff...

I guess I'll just have to load my songs a little at a time....I'm pretty bummed though, because I organized them really nicely on the Sandisk...it took a while. Oh well, sour grapes...thanks hrogi

I don't believe this is true. I used a 16GB flash drive to load my uConnect hard drive.

Unclejjg, it could be your sandisk flash drive has some weird proprietary auto-download software on it or has some encryption enabled. Before wasting a bunch of time and since flash drives are cheap nowadays, I'd recommend trying another one (just avoid any with built-in security or auto-installing software).

My Sandisk U3 Cruzer won't work either.

See I was proven wrong.....

But I think the it was the unit not the memery space that messed it up like Mt mike says...

The stuff I deal with is SD card most of the time..

i use my 32 gig corsair survivor no problem. the thing is, try to reformat ur 8gb stick using fat and then try again. RER does not understand anything but removable media formatted with FAT.

2gb is a filesize limitation on the FAT system, but im yet to see a audio file of that size:)

For those of us who expect things to "just work" after paying good money for them....would you be kind enough to expand upon "FAT". I'm only moderately tech/gizmo savvy.

The Sandisk drives work a little differently behind the scenes than most USB drives; there is a utility that you can download that will make it work like a 'normal' usb drive, and it should work from there; if you are interested in details I can find the link

fat is a type of filesystem used in older operating systems like win 98 and older. while ntfs is the new kind that windows uses. fat is a de facto standard for the removable devices due to being the most widespread type of file system.

FAT make clusters of data to big and bukly
FAT32 stream lines everything to a point. it gets buly as well on larger storage.
NTFS is great for larger storage ....

For me I can fit more data on a 2GB SD card with FAT32 then FAT.
FAT just makes thing to large.

More data. for the sake of data

FAT is good when u need to use for up to 2GB.
FAT fit more data in the same space as FAT but will only support up to 32GB.
NFTS is the format used for anything larger then 32GB's.
It is also faster on drive with large amount of storage is used.

thanks for clarification, i meant fat32, not original fat, its just i dont rly use fat anymore so at work i name fat32 just as fat:)
there is more to ntfs than just speed or cluster size but thats beyond the scope of this topic.

Also, I would encourage you to not organize your files just on your flash drive prior to upload. I organized my files in a separate area on my computer's hard drive and then once complete, then I copied it to my 16GB flash drive and then uploaded to the uConnect hard drive. I wanted to have a back-up on my computer of the files exactly as I uploaded them. At some point if you own your KK with uConnect long enough, something is going to happen to it. Maybe some software upgrade will cause all your contents to be lost, maybe it will be a failure of the head unit, trade-in for a new vehicle, who knows. I just know I wanted to be able to quickly restore my files when the inevitable happens. Just my $0.02.

I have the exact same USB stick (8GB SanDisk Cruzer w/ U3) and it works just fine. Make sure you disable the U3 utility on the computer when you plug it in. There is an option when you run U3 to turn it off and make the USB stick into a normal removable drive (it makes the stick read/writable and formats it FAT).

The U3 utility never really goes away since there's always a file left on the stick for Restore U3. The only way you can get rid of it is via the third-party program that's out there.
