Doc, what tire size are you running? What prompted you to change gearing?

thanks for all the input. most likely i'll go to 4.10's. a little rich for my blood, anyone in the d.c., baltimore area know how to install? likes to work for booze? btw, try 12.1 mpg. thats what the overhead says anyway.

If u come into westminster go to AO (Appalachian offroad) and they will do it...amazing work but for a good amount of coin....

Well I crunched some numbers and you guys were correct. Going from stock tire size 225/75/16 (29.3") to the tire I want 235/85/16 (31.5") isnt that big a jump, but to keep the numbers (rpm at speed) close to factory Ill need to upgrade to 4.10's. And at that going up to 4.10's will actually put me a tad LOWER. I.E. stock RPM in 5th at 60 MPH is 1719 RPM. The same speed with the new tires and 4.10's (60 MPH in 5th) 1758.

Now that's not really noticeable but lower is better.

While Im at it Im going to throw ARBs in there. I hope I can find someplace under the hood for the compressor.

Well - the regear to 4.10 presumes that the 3.73 was a good ratio for the Diesel in the beginning

I think that's a bad assumption.

The 3.73 was there because the V6 needed it, and it's not bad on the Diesel if you're towing a 5000lb trailer.

but if you're running lightly loaded - a 3.50 or 3.20 would have been a lot better for the Diesel stock.

Does that mean you disagree with re gearing for tire change?

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: makes no sense even with a diesel, why go larger tires and higher gearing end up with a 2.50 gear ratio or something silly like that, even with diesels its not good to lug them down too much unless there is a huge difference between a 500 horsepower Cat in a long nose Pete and a CRD Liberty !!!

X2.......................

The few CRD's I've driven needed much lower gears, they felt severely undergeared, one barely had enough power to pull itself on our alignment rack under it's own power  .

Ok it appears we should be talking about 4.11 and not 4.10. Randy's shows 4.11's for the Chrystler 8.25 rear and 4.11 for the Dana (monster) 30. In fact their chart is wrong in that it only shows a year range of 2002 to 2005 for the front Dana30. I called asking about it and they thought it was a typo....

bet you would argue if the chicken or the egg came first  but I am sitting here looking at a set of 4.10s for an 8.25 rear, stamped right on the box and all ! Now yes I think you are right about the front 30 being 4.11s as a matter of fact lot of 4 WDs have the same difference in the front and rear

Interesting. Well I did see 4.11s on Randys site. So if they are available why not match the front and rear sets if you can?

most vehicles do not have matched fronts and rears even though they will say for example 3.55s, the rear may in fact be a 3.55 ratio and the fronts 3.54s from the factory. Most places even advertise them that way as to not confuse "normal" people. Who ever noraml people are

Let's see, Ive regeared to 4.56, 5.29. 5.38, and 4.10. All different rigs and I was able to match them every time. Why would you be unable to march them?

YOU may of gotten a MATCHED SET but that does still not mean that they were both 4.10s front and rear!
You are really not reading what I am writing so never mind ...I have never done any gear swaps in my life,     only have a little red wagon I pull around to pick up cans in.
not worth arguing about something that most do not even know happens
you don't even want me to start listing all the 4WDs that I have done, take some time and look at some of the things I have built over the years then come back and tell me again that you have done 3 or 4 swaps

Sorry but
jeez

Tom have you ever asked yourself, is it me arguing with them or them arguing with me?

I don't think he was ever questioning your credibility or experience...we all know how much "experience" you have. But you haven't actually answered the mans question or are you trying to in your own little way??
Are you trying to say that even though a gear ratio is stamped on the box and on the gears that really isn't what they are??
