There's only really one issue that really goes wrong with the 45RFE,it's a simple $20 fix.Might want to rethink, you are replacing a 42 already.

The most common problem that the 45RFE has is the valve body side plate like to blow off and bend,a HD version and new bolts is like $20 some dollars.

Is their a difference in length between the 42 & 45? If not then the DS would be same since it goes into the transfer case and not the trans.

Also curious about adding the 45 to a late model. Would the computers know the difference or care?

I thought there was enough of a difference that you would need a different tranny crossmember. Am I wrong? If it turns out to be easier than I thought than this tranny is not going to stay in place long.

The 42RLE is a good transmission, maybe not the best, but it's a good transmission. I would recommend adding the TransGo Shift Kit.
